I think to any sensible person its been like that for a while now. I mean, everyone knew exactly what being a communist or a fascist in the early 20th century onwards meant about you. Or even before then, in the enlightenment. Only the simplest of definitions of 'politics' would be taken to not matter or say anything about a person.

Agree on the facts: the statistics, the events, all of that.
You can have different interpretations or solutions, but you should agree on what the problem is.
Do not get emotional when discussing.
Do not yell.
Do not treat the other person as if they were worse than you.

I have dated a neonazi and a huge liberal lefty and managed to discuss politics with both without having problems.
