How can you help someone that's depressed? Obviously not

Listen to them, don't try to give unwarranted advice or tell them "you'll feel better eventually". Just be there as a kind shoulder to cry on and accept them for how they are now.

Easy to say and even to do, harder to make them notice. If you can't tell them it will be better or give advice, how do you make them see you're actually listening and they're not ranting before a wall.

Invite them along to places. Try not to let them huddle in their house for weeks without taking to anyone. But don't the forceful or insistent about this, just ask them along and say you'd like their company. If they don't want to leave the house, try to spend time with them anyway. Human interaction is important.

Depressed people tend to let their life fall apart in the small ways, like letting their house get messy or dishes pile up and they might forget to eat real food. Go visit. Cook with them, chatter whatever and help then clean a bit if you can. Basically, help them maintain some order in their life.

If they're someone you're close to, initiate physical contact. Hug them, put a hand on their shoulder, etc. Physical touch is healthy for people and getting touched releases feel-good hormones. Same with chocolate or something, so bring a treat along when you visit.

Don't say stupid stuff like "cheer up" or comment on how obviously shitty they're feeling. Just let them know you're there if they need you.

My sister has suffered from major depression for years and these are some things that I've noticed I can do to help.
