Anyone here ever been homeless?

It's starting to look like I'm going to be living in my car for a while. Still got a job, though, and the locker room has a shower so food and personal hygiene are pretty much covered.

Any tips or word of advice on how to prepare beforehand?
>>
>>17784585

depending on where you live, you should try and invest in a really fucking warm blanket. thermal under clothes and socks would be ideal while sleeping in your car.

save up, and find a place to live. thats it. if you got a job and you got a shower, you're not doing too bad.

its going to be difficult but please try to save money by not eating out every meal. stock up on a bag of apples, some bananas etc. anything that doesn't require codl storage (unless its just winter freezing where you live in which case you're kind of in luck).

if you have friends, invite yourself over to dinner or to chill a lot.
>>
>>17784585

if you're in the los angeles area i can house you until like... monday.
>>
>>17784607
Don't be a bum, if they offer help accept, but you don't wanna lose your friends on top of your home. I'd trade my car in for a camper van if i was in your shoes. What's the timeframe you're planning on being homeless?
>>
>>17784619

i said invite yourself over for dinner, not to stay the night. if a friend is gonna leave you cuz you just want to chill at their place and have some food when you lost your house, then bleed em dry, they're not good friends.
>>

Where are you?
Why?
How long you gonna be homeless for?
Are you able to afford rent?
How long before you can afford rent?
Do you have friends that can support you?
Anyone you can room with or couch-surf?
How much do you make each month?

Living in your car fucking sucks. Almost anything is better than that. Facing homelessness is the shittest feeling in the world, I swear to God. I have lost so much money as a result of impending homelessness which traps you in a cycle of struggling to provide housing

Depending on where you work, you can often find corners that are pretty much abandoned after hours. Where I work, there are various corners you can occupy and sleep in overnight. You just need to wake up early in the morning and get in late at night and you will be just fine. It is safer, warmer and generally better than living in your car in winter.

I feel for you, bro

Offer to make your friends dinner once a week in exchange for use of their kitchen/fridge. Make it clear that you don't need to sleep there, you just need to use the kitchen. You can lie and say you are staying in a motel or campsite or wherever so they don't think you are trying to force them to take you in.
Keep refrigerated food at work and then eat your lunch/dinner there
Fruit and non-perishables are excellent investments.
>>
>>17784607
It's going to get cold, so getting a blanket and using my trunk as a freezer are likely options.

Does not having a current address hamper your odds of finding a place, if everything else is fine?

>>17784613
That's a chivalrous offer but I'm not in the US. And I'm not thrown out quite yet.

>>17784619
Until I get a flat, I guess.

>>17784633
I do three-shift work at a factory. Occupied 24/7, no quiet hours or corners. The money is pretty good, but the punch clock system ensures people fuck off when their work hours are over.

I'm not sure how long it takes to get housing.

>>17784637
Oh, right, I can use the work fridge, too! So I have a fridge and a shower. That's something.
>>
I was homeless in a shelter before.
It's. good life experience,

Dont get too comfortable living like that and work on your bargain skills so you can survive.
>>
>>17784675

>does not having a current address hamper your odds of finding a place

not really. i mean imagine how difficult it would be if you moved to a NEW CITY and they said 'LOL YOU DONT HAVE AN ADDRESS YET? WHY WOULD WE GIVE YOU AN ADDRESS THEN?

set up a PO box or ask to use a friends place and if asked hwere you're staying say 'with friends for now'.
>>
>>17784675
Oh most socialist places have homeless shelters, look for any govt handouts to help for awhile but, don't abuse them.

Pretty much everyone said what I was going to say,
Non-US countries are pretty helpful to be homeless.
Make sure you know the laws for trespassing, learn urban camouflage,
Work on making yourself blend in as much as possible.
On your days off read a book, find small things to enrich your mind. When your mind gets lazy and you get too comfortable you'll lose drive to get out of homelessness and stay that way.
That is a terrible fate.

Can I ask which region you live in? Are you in the UK?

>I'm not sure how long it takes to get housing
It depends. I am British so can only really advise on the system here
You can report to the Town Hall/Local Council in the morning at register your self as homeless/seeking shelter/accommodation. If you are a single, white male you are going to have to wait longer for housing than a single mother from any ethnic minority background. I'm just saying that your ability to find housing in this way will depend on your background.

The local authorities can list you for a council house, provide you a with housing in a shelter/hostel, recommend a hostel or advise on renting.

If you are looking to find a place to rent quickly, then this can be quite straightforward depending on circumstances.

You can book multiple viewings each day with an estate agent. Book with multiple agents. There will be unoccupied properties that you can move on quickly.

>Does not having a current address hamper your odds of finding a place, if everything else is fine?
No
In the UK, you need identification, a bank account, proof of income, references and a deposit. Your references will be the last two landlords that you had. If you are leaving this place on good terms, that should be pretty straightforward. If your "landlord" is a friend or relative then they don't really want to see references from these people because it is inherently unreliable. If references are an issue, they may ask for a larger deposit.

When you see a place you like, you submit a basic application (pretty much just personal details) and then wait. You normally get approved within 48hrs. You may have to wait up to a week for references to come back. After that point, pay the deposit, sign the contract and you can move in as soon as the property is available. Theoretically, you can move into a property within a week. Just remember- most contracts are for 1 year, don't get stuck in a shithole.

Fucking this

It's not so much that you get comfortable but you resign yourself to a certain fate.

You have to fight fucking hard every day to get out of the situation. Most of your concentration and energy has to go into no longer being homeless.

I was really scared when I realised how close I was to falling entirely out of the arse of society.

Finland.

I don't have previous landlords, I'm moving straight out of mom's place.

I know being homeless is about as bad as it can get, but living with my dysfunctional goddamn family is starting to get unbearable.
>>
>>17784585
Basically what everyone else said.
I'd also advice spending a lot of time in libraries, that's what i did when i couldn't stay at home for a while. Also if you'd be in the Netherlands i'd be willing to help you out

>living with my dysfunctional goddamn family is starting to get unbearable.
Make plans to move out, if you can, rather than just walking out on them. Not because it will damage your relationship or hurt someones feelings or any of that shit. It's more that being homeless sucks so much that it much better to wait 2 weeks to sort out a flat rather than live in your car for 2 weeks. You will always end up wasting time and money when homeless. That is a fact.

>>17784773
This is a fucking great idea.

One of the things I do in life generally is to identify public buildings that have accessible areas which are not well-guarded at night. They are essentially fail-safes/backups in case I need a warmth/shelter for a night. I can be confident that I will be able to access them and leave them without being detected and I get to have a restful sleep in a safe area.

You would be surprised how easy this is to achieve

Not an issue, you will still be able to rent.

Hi OP,
I'm assuming that you are a Finnish citizen.
I'd also like to point out that the advice that you've gotten so far is pretty solid.
Piece of advice:
DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT move into your car over the winter, sure summer can be ok, but not this.
You won't like where it will lead you, and you'll soon get to regret it.
- so if you're not suffering from any direct abuse at home, then you've got it good.

Since you're still living at home and haven't been living out yet then I'm assuming that you haven't reached the age of 29 yet(hopefully younger than 25), as then the social system is in a position of assisting to a higher extent rather than if you'd have been older.
Go speak with a social worker in your area and get a recommendation for an appointment with one who's specialised in those cases.
They will assist you in getting set up for applying for this and that +extras.
If possible, join the A-Kassa.
Yours is through PAM I recon.
..you know, just in case something happens so you won't get screwed and end up with no money if you get fired.
