I am older than you, yes. And that's the thing though-it would be very easy to not see him around if things went wrong. But you do make a good point, it might not be as good as I think...

It would end my career too (I'm working on my PhD and will basically have the exact job he does in a few years, minus tenure...), so I would think we would be in a similar position.

I'm not going to pretend this doesn't ever happen, particularly with grad students. But there ARE some rules.

Don't do it if he's married.

Don't do it while you're in his class. You really shouldn't while you're in the program and he theoretically still has power, but the area does get a little greyer.

Wait until you're out of his class, and then befriend him. Go to his office for general advice until he enjoys your just hanging out and chatting. Then you can start whatever seduction techniques you use.

And give up if he resists or rejects you.

I'm 26 and have no intention of becoming a professor but banging hot undergrads is possible and here is what happened in my case:
I had to substitute for my friend when he was away for conference and teach this really tedious calculus class for non-math majors, I've always hated teaching and especially this type of subject so I just sorted of breezed through everything, sighed a lot and stared at the clock, the students seemed impressed for some reason, probably because I showed them some standard analysis tricks like the epsilon/2^n trick that they had never seen before, I finished the lecture and still had like 10 minutes left, I talked to some guy about video games, finally the class was over, I jokingly announced that it was my only class and I don't teach and they probably won't see me again unless they are very lost. Afterwards, this girl came to me asked for my phone number.
At that time I had a long distance relationship with another girl at the other side of the country, things looked bad, so I broke up with my then gf and started hanging out with this attractive chick five years younger than me, seemed like an obvious choice to fill my void. Then I dated her for two months and met my current gf at a party we went to. They were close friends.

Moral of the story is, the main reasons I would date one of my student is because (a) she's very attractive and (b) I'm just a sub for one class so there's no risk for my career.
Is your professor like Walter Lewin or Richard Feynman? i.e. he held emeritus for years, passed the peak of his career long ago, had enough fame and money for his lifetime and doesn't really give a shit about anyone's opinion of him anymore, if that's the case he might actually fuck you. Otherwise you'd have to wait a long time til the end of your course.
