This is meant as an insult, isn't it?
"It means a lot for you to tell me this. It really does. I'm more than happy to continue supporting you. I always will. You're a great person. Everything aside, the past and all that, you are inherently a good person. I see that in you. I know that. It's rare. I appreciate you being good."
That was the response to saying I value this person as a friend.

MANY things. This person is very left wing and I'm a centrist. Politics have seldom if ever entered our conversations.
I've since apologised and this person has supposedly forgiven me and understood.

I can see where you're coming from, but I would be optimistic here.
Go ahead and resume your friendship, allow time to heal your wounds and have a fulfilling life. I wouldn't feel resentful unless there was something very obvious that indicated to you that this person is not a good one to have in your life at the moment.
