Please help, how the fuck do I adult?

I'm going out to a nearby Covered California place to ask for insurance, and I'm sure that's going to be an easy process. But how do I "get" a doctor?

I have a multitude of health problems and I haven't been to a doctor for years. If I have a penis problem.... do I talk to a urologist or do I talk to a family doctor about it first? I also have general health problems and want a checkup. How about for eyes, teeth, and spinal issues?

I'm on my parents insurance still so I'm not sure how that part works, but as far as I know you get insurance, then go on zocdoc (an online directory) or something and simply look for general practitioners in your area who take your insurance. You can go to that guy for a general exam, and then for any problems he doesn't have the expertise to help with he'll recommend a guy for you.

No shame in being behind on doctor visits, op. Plenty of people are in your same position. Kudos to you for taking action.

You should get a primary care physician. When you get your insurance plan you'll probably have a list of clinics and hospitals they'd prefer you choose from, so you'll be able to pick one up there. A primary care doctor for an adult usually practices internal medicine or family practice/family medicine (which obviously includes more expertise with children and pregnancy). In rural areas you will find more family practice physicians than internists.

Generally, you should see this doctor first for any issues that come up, and he/she will refer you to a specialist if necessary. You don't necessarily need a referral to see a specialist (I have literally walked into an audiologist's once, for instance) but often your insurance requires it and it's a good idea because your primary care doctor will usually have a good idea of what you need and who you should see for it.

Eyes and teeth you see optometrists and dentists for and they are a way more straightforward and businesslike process. If your health plan includes vision and dental than see the above advice but if not it's like any other thing you go to a business for. My vision insurance basically reimburses me for one eye exam and one pair of glasses (or $300 worth of contacts) every year and everything else is basically just walk in pay cash.

When you buy insurance they'll give you a number to call and it's that persons whole job to help you with these thing

Stealing your thread OP

>always been in good health
>don't smoke, eat right, exercise, etc.
>one month ago woke up with sore throat
>hurts when swallowing
>ignored it at first
>didn't go away after a week
>finally went to pharmacist
>she recommended bunch of medicine
>medicine helps temporarily but still hurts after a month
>throat getting more sore and achy
>now feeling chest pains and tiredness
>make too much for medicaid but not enough to afford health insurance

Fuck, I think I'm dying.

What were you diagnosed with? Maybe you have some kind of respiratory infection that needs stronger meds. Is there no urgent care you can go to?

Haven't been diagnosed yet. Pharmacist said it might be post nasal drip but go see a doc if meds don't improve it. I'm calling a ENT tomorrow.

you get a job with benefits. if you cant do that you get catastrophe insurance with extremely high deductible so you pay out of pocket for everything short of catastrophe. thats assuming you live in the home of the brave and dont have money
