It's Japan, so 50 miles = two hour train ride. Only her stepfather knows how to drive. 10 miles means she could personally come to pick me up via train.

Ask her if you think it's alright to meet her stepfather. You'll have to meet him someday, I actually think it'd be better in a situation like this where just the two of you can get to know each other.

Rail in Japan is insanely convenient and easy to use. The only time he might have an issue is if his gf lives far out in the country. It doesn't sound like that's the case though.
