I hate myself for it but I get a fair bit of socializing done in the youtube comments. i like how dumb the people are so i can always be right about things.

In general, I consider socializing via the internet a vice for normal people. if you socialize with real people, you can make friends, contacts, and sex.

but, you didn't ask for how to improve yourself. In the olden days I had the best chats on non-anonymous forums with reputation systems. Even a lot of my most technical interests have a forum with a "anything goes" section. I would probably talk there if I wasn't torturing and/or improving myself.

I used to talk on a couple now defunct forums, as well as linux questions and revleft. My interests have changed, and I don't think I'd enjoy those much anymore. But there's a forum for just about everything, and most of them sprawl beyond the original purpose. I found a lot of great music on revleft, for example.

IRC on freenode is another option. Be aware that it will show your IP address until you get it set up, but it's a great way to get quick help on things too.
