What kind of interests do you have? Any sort of clubs or groups you can find like-minded individuals in? Try opening up conversation with someone. Tell her that you really enjoyed talking with them and you're hoping to make a few more friends to hang out with. Exchange numbers and keep in touch with them. Keep up contact at the group setting and also offer opportunities to meet outside. Maybe a quick lunch or a fun activity like going to the movies.

I feel you. I just don't seem to click well with girls, it's not that they hate me, but I can never seem to get close enough to other girls to call them my friend...
I have no problem making male friends, but I don't like them. I only really have interest in have girls as friends...but I'm terrible at it.

No. We're friends and then inevitably something shitty happens and I'm down a friend. They get drunk and tell me I "friendzoned" them, or they get too comfortable and start telling me about the horrifying way they feel about and things they do to other women, or I find out they're drinking their piss, or even one dude who accidentally admitted to me he didn't see anything wrong with "consensual" kiddie porn. As for OP, you have no real choice but to leave your comfort zone and start striking up conversations with random women anyway. It doesn't really get much more approachable than the situation you mentioned with the art class. You already know you have stuff in common, lots of things around you to discuss (even asking for an opinion on what you're doing or whatever)... it doesn't get any easier. Yeah it's scary, but there's never going to be a magical loophole. (Okay, maybe once. But you're never going to set up a healthy social circle like that.) So better to tackle it now than in three years time, right?
