Why do so many graduated music majors say majoring in music is a bad idea yet they have done it themselves? This literally comes out of every music majors mouth. If they think it's a bad idea how come they went through with it?

Because they are smarter in hindsight.

I'm a music student, planning to make it my major even though I realise it's not a very safe career financial wise.

I can't speak for other people, but I'm guessing it's such a passion that it's not really a choice for them to do anything else. That doesn't mean we can't be self-aware.

because they either werent told it was bad, or they didn't believe the people who told them and are now trying to stop people from being as stupid as they were.
>>
i majored in music, i got really lucky out of school and worked something pretty close to my dream job for 2 or 3 years. that has since dried up and im doing delivery driving now which i also enjoy.

its true majoring in music doesnt put you in a particularly good spot career wise relative to other majors, but personally i did it because it was the only thing i could see myself doing at the time. i dont regret it at all.

It means they already have a safe source of income to sustain them when/if music fails.

If you have no such safety barriers under you, it's a bad choice, is what they're really saying

tl;dr they're stable enough in life that the grim financial prospects of music aren't much of an issue

because you just play gigs the rest of your life and give music lessons. Instead of making real money.
