Better to get her training instead.
A switch-blade would be useless in self-defense if she can't/won't use it.
A small gun would be better anyway- you don't need a large frame or intimidating posture to become a *credible* deadly threat, and thereby avoid violence altogether.
Or survive it if you have to.
She'd STILL need training, but a piddly gun > a piddly knife for self-defense.

Practicality on the other hand is a perfectly fine reason to have one- just make sure to check out state's laws about them. They can be surprisingly anal about it.

Using a knife for self-defense is an incredibly shitty idea, even if you're trained, which she won't be (although lesson one is something you can teach her yourself: if you're in a self-defense situation, don't pull a fucking knife, you're just going to escalate things and probably get it taken away from you and used against you). Buy her pepper spray if you have to buy her anything and teach her to make smart choices.

A knife is a useful tool to carry, though, provided you get it through your head that you are never, ever going to use it in a fight.
