I've got pectus excavatum as well. I already know I will not get the procedure because of the cost. I have decided that strengthening my core and chest may be the answer.

I've never been self conscious about it. I've never had a girlfriend react badly to it, and I can go swimming and not even think about it. My lung capacity is 2/3 of what a normal person's should be, and one of my favorite things to do is ride my bike. It'd be nice not to get winded so easily, and it's also be nice to have a lower resting heart rate.

How was it? How long until you could go back to work/school?

Not as bad as I feared. I was off work for about 3 or 4 months. The first week was pretty rough but it got much better after that. Sleeping on my back was a nightmare so I ended up using a reclining chair as a bed.
I'm about 11 months in now and I'm mostly fine. Sneezing hurts like a batch but other than that I'm good.

How was the day to day?

First two days where rough. The morphine and codeine made me sick whenever they tried to sit me up and the drugs messed with my eyes so I couldn't focus my sight. Third day they took me off the drip pain killers and started me on pills. I could stand up and walk around unaided by the afternoon. My pain was up a bit but still tolerable.
I was in hospital for another 3 days after that and I was fairly okay. I had a lot of back pain but I think that was mostly due to the hospital beds.
I was stiff and a little sore at home, standing up for long periods was uncomfortable and sleeping was awkward. I couldn't do anything overly physical for about 5 months but now I'm bowling and fencing fine.
