Is 4chan bad for you?

Sure it's a great catharsis to bitch about stuff

But I think that perpetually being in a state of anger (which is what 4chan is) probably does more harm than good to my real world life
>>

>Is 4chan bad for you?
Born too late to explore the Earth.
Born too early to explode the galaxy.
Born just in time to testify The Yellow-bellied Yoni Crony on /adv/.
Surelly awesome.
>>
>>17632340
>Born too late to explore the Earth.

unless you where a lord or soldier you couldent really explore the earth anyway, and even then you would be under threat from bandits and constantly fighting.
>>
/pol/ is bad for you. /r9k/ is bad for you. Even /v/ is bad for you, really. But most of 4chan is fine. Just avoid those, and watch out for raids from them.
>>
>>17632323
4chan is getting shutdown anyway
>>
>>17632323
I certainly find myself happier when I haven't been to 4chan in a few days.
>>17632370
Racism & misogyny abound on the porn boards too, though that's hardly surprising. Even /adv/ pisses me off.
>>
>>17632370

As a /pol/ack, bullshit, many other boards are just as autistic, in fact even MORE so

At least most people on /pol/ interact with the real world and have real lives. People on other boards like /v/ just don't. They're shut in weirdos.

>>17632382

Racism and misogyny are natural

4chan is great.
>>
Unless you can't seperate the values of this site from the values of reality, no. I use a lot of 4chan as a tool used for getting news on specific interests, discovering new media, and finding more sites relevant to my interests like webstores, download sites, etc.

Without 4chan I would have probably never discovered things that are now very important to me. And depending on the board, actual discussion, interaction, and shitposting of similar interest is pretty cool too.
>>
>>17632406
Racism is.
>>
>>17632323
i mean they either go on here or cut their wrists so this is probably better
>>
I use it to distract myself when I get stuck in a negative train of thought. Plus to kill time. Coming here doesn't make you a bad person, despite the stigma.
>>
For most people it is.

Quick test. After spending some time on here, do you feel more relaxed than before? More upbeat? More inspired?

Or do you feel more angsty and insecure, angry, paranoid or bitter?
>>
Just like everything, Its fine in moderation but can become a problem if you use it too often. Can also become a problem if you take the things you read on here seriously and not as the extreme edgy views that they usually are.

I feel less angry at my own situation

I feel content for finding people like me

And I feel irrepressible rage towards normies

>>
to be honest, even with all its flaws, the chans are pretty much the only remaining social outlet in my life. chans ain't that bad if you got no alternatives, yo
>>
>>17632323
4chan wouldn't be necessary if social media wasn't a thing. Now anything you say/post can be looked up and taken out of context. I'm not saying there's some evil government employee just waiting for the right moment to do you in, but that sort of stuff is the reason why teachers don't post pictures of themselves at bars, or why some people refuse to post anything politcal for fear of repercussions.

You can talk about pretty much anything here and your manager will never find out.
>>
>>17633094
Wew
>>
>>17632874

The state of the Internet kind of makes 4chan irrelevant as a repository of knowledge of any kind. You can usually find resources to so many different things outside of this website very easily, often of a higher quality than any facsimile made by users of this site.

Some discussions may be enjoyable enough, but really insightful ones are probably more common in niche blogs, articles and books. A lot of what gets talked about here is just secondary. Admittedly you can stumble across an anon who points you to a resource you didn't know existed before, and that is fine, but surfing this place with no goal is generally a massive waste of time.
>>
>>17632323
I can't speak for anyone else, but it's for sure bad for me. It just makes me hate everything. Makes you wonder why I'm here really.

(Spoiler: I hate myself and like making myself suffer).
>>
>>17632323
>perpetually being in a state of anger (which is what 4chan is)
I don't understand what brings people like you to 4chan, people who fundamentally misunderstand what 4chan is. Is it a curious spectacle to you? Both Facebook and Reddit are more suited to you, they're a lot more straightforward. I've been on 4chan since 2008 (and I'm STILL considered new in terms of the culture of the site), and it's vastly improved my life.
>>
Everything in moderation anon, including 4chan, and never take anything too seriously. Don't live your life worrying about unimportant shit and take the time to sit back, relax and laugh at the life.
>>
>>17633089
>And I feel irrepressible rage towards normies
I'd say it's envy (at least for me). Everyone wants to live a "normal" life, it's just that not everyone can.
>>
>>17632367
This.
>>
/mu/ quite literally made my life better.

I don't go there anymore, but i used to spend hours and hours on there every day, just soaking up all kinds of genres and movements in music.

So, there's that.
>>
>>17632323
I was already depressed when I discovered 4chan, and don't think anything has changed, so no, it's just entertainment, time-passer. If you're young though the opinions you get from this shithole will make you an unbearable asshole.
>>
i have been in 4chan for 30 minutes, and I am okay
>>
>>17632367
You mean sailor
>>
It really depends on your personality and how seriously you take the place. If you're easily influenced or otherwise vulnerable, then you're likely to suffer negative effects of being here. I, on the other hand, have found that it's only really improved my reasoned arguing skills
>>
>>17633924
>reasoned arguing skills
I mean, really ?
>>
>>17633931
You underestimate how dedicated people can be to their world views. It's good practice arguing against them using logic and evidence
>>
>>17633924
>>17633940

Philosophy grad here

"Reasoned arguing skills" are incredibly overrated

Unless you want to be like a politician I guess, otherwise they're just pretty pointless. There comes a point where you realise everybody is an idiot and arguing with them is a complete waste of your time and solves nothing.
>>
>>17633967
>>17633967
Well I am a law student so it's not like I won't utilise them. I know when to argue and when to leave it btw.
>>
>>17633981

Fair nuff
>>
>>17633967
This. Logic never beats emotion in the real world. Objective truth is usually irrelevant.
>>
>>17632323
>>17632323
>perpetually being in a state of anger

either stop getting baited which I doubt you are, or go to better boards, I go to 4chan to be entertained, relax and discuss shit, so like I said either try new boards, or take a break for a bit to avoid burning out I guess. It's cliche as fuck but don't let one apple spoil the bunch
>>
It depends on how you use it. The worst thing most boards here can do is hurt your attention span, while the worst boards here can warp your world view entirely and make you really unhappy. On the other hand, /mu/ has one of the best collective tastes in music on the internet, and I've received a lot of helpful advice from /fit/. As long as you don't waste your entire day browsing those boards, they're great.

Um, no. /r9k/ maybe, and even that is doubtful. No others. Not even /mlp/ reaches your levels.

>At least most people on /pol/ interact with the real world and have real lives.
Pic related
>>
use at as you will, but i think of it as nothing but a timesink where i can meme to my hearts content
>>
>>17632947
same
>>
>>17632974
for me it's a mix of both.
I always overthink things anyways but I like being able to give my two cents on things i'm familiar with to help ppl out on /adv/.
It usually feels good to try and help others so there's that.
But on other days I just feel like shit.
That's why I usually just go to /co/.
>>
I first started coming here to laugh. Nothing made me laugh as hard as the threads on 4chan. Now I come here to talk about things that interest me. Anger never played any part in me coming here, and I don't take anything posted here seriously enough to get angry about.

So, maybe consider that your anger isn't 4chan's fault.
>>
>>17632397
No, /pol/ is just about the worst board on this site except maybe for /r9k/. You've just been there too long to see how ugly the shit you post on there looks to everybody else.
>>
>>17632974
Given that /adv/ is my main board but I'm here more to give advice than ask for it, I really don't feel either way. I just turn it off and get on with my life, I don't dwell on what I see here and the conversations I've had. Same with other boards I visit
>>
>>17632323
>Is 4chan bad for you?
Well that really depends how you use it. If you come on here to bitch about stuff, and can come to terms with the stuff you bitched about, and let it go, then no, 4chan is not bad for you. The issue that arises is when you find the root of your issue or annoyance, whatever it maybe, and don't let it go. You want to show that annoyance it can't control you, by making it humorous. But now the thing you have created for humor is all you talk about.

So your annoyance or whatever, is now a common topic of your conversation. See, if it was just your annoyance it would be fine, but everyone shares your annoyance. So you all joke and bitch and hate and spit this annoyance, even though you have belittled it and given it humor. You have now allowed the annoyance into your thought process, and you are unable to let it go.

So what do you do? You just keep digging that hole deeper. Finding different ways to express your emotions of the annoyance, yet at the end of the night, when the boards are all gone and you are going to bed, the annoyance still rests on your mind.

You can't give identities to your issues if you aren't willing to tell them goodbye once you have relieved yourself of them. If you give your issue an identity and allow it to thrive in humor and pity, it will grow, and fester until it is more of a real thing then you are

Who will remember you in 20 years? Who will remember your hivemind annoyance in 20 years? Id imagine the thing you hate most and gave life and strength will still be existing and talked about long after you are gone.
>>
>>17635025
There is a way out, but the first thing you must do is give that annoyance an a identity. Make it funny. Belittle it. Make it seem so insignificant and petty people wonder if it actually bothers them, or if its just an on going joke. Once you have identified and propped your annoyance, have your fun, make your rage comics and your jokes but when you leave your computer, leave your annoyance with you. Do not let your annoyance follow you in your life, and allow it to change how you think. Remember it was just a dumb witty comment or joke, and leave it at that.

The issue with some of the boards on 4chan is that the people that thrive here are like everyone else. They want a place to relieve themselves at the end of the day. Its the modern day water cooler full of gossip. Most people can chalk it up as office chitchat and news about coworkers, but their will always be the few who will never be able to shake off what they heard. They will never learn to let it go. Most people on 4chan have a difficulty letting things go, and would rather perpetuate the annoyance indefinitely than bury the hatchet and keep moving forward

So no, 4chan isn't a bad place, people just don't know when to stop. What else is new?
>>
>>17632323
4chan is not a single place, remember ? you can choose
