it happens to a lot of people, especially those who arn't paid weekly or are casual

1. refer your bills
most providers esp utility have heaps of clients who can't pay on time, they don't want to loose a customer every time someoene cant make a bill
often you can defer the bill for a week or two, sometimes longer
sometimes there is a fee, but it's often partiall waived if you contact them instead of just not paying
only word of caution is that if you defer; actually pay.

2. simply don't pay
not a good option, but the reality is that big companies arn't going to be that upset and arn't going to chase you for a few weeks because it's not worth their time
consider this ONLY if option 1 fails, becomes much more serious if you havn't tried 1
pick the biggest company you can't pay who you've tried deffering with

3. line the debt to a support agency
if you can, social services can link a bill to a payment you get, so you just get less benefit for a few weeks
they don't usually charge anything at all, and it's an easy way to mannage it

3. get a loan off a mate or from your family
pretty self explanatory, most people need money at some point in their life and it's better to borrow from people who won't rip you off, especially if it's a reasonably small amount

4. get a payday loan
this is not a good idea, in fact it's a really bad idea
usually you are charged a horrible horrible exploitative rate of interest
the 200 you owe becomes 300, and if you can't pay the extra hundred it grows and grows and grows
that being said, better than getting evicted

That still implies you are spending money on going out for food once a week and paying to do other things.

How the fuck does this occur? How would you not know what to expect to get paid? I'm genuinely curious here, I don't understand how you'd manage this.

not OP, but I can give some insight

if you work as a casual, it can be hard to keep track of the hours you work in a week, especially if your roster is changing around

or if your pay has a performance component, like managers often do, sales staff frequently, some other models

some people have pay deferred to the date of sale if they work on projects

and sometimes people in buisiness expect deals o come through that don't, or they face unexpected expenses

As far as not being able to pay your bills goes, the really important thing is to let your creditors know right away. Most companies are ok with late payments as long as you tell them.

As for avoiding this in the future, scrolling and scraping is ok up to a point but the real answer is to earn more. About 6 years ago I went from making c. £30k a year to £65k, and I'm past y2k now. While some of it came about from a couple of decades experience, knowing the right people and some blind luck, it also had a lot to do with saying I can do something I don't then figuring it out on the fly, and having the nerve to say things like "I know that's what you paid the last bloke, but if you want /me/ to do it it's going to cost more" or "(competitor) offered me the same package but with a Jag instead of a mondeo", when really they didn't even interview you.
