>start my PhD
>my supervisor is pretty young too
>she's 27, I'm 24
>we get along pretty well, our research is going well
>in the lab on a Thursday night and she says we should have a drink down at the uni bar
>we do, it's fun
>she get ridiculously drunk though
>it's kind of awkward but the chat is chill
>she asks the same the next week
>same event, only this time she cries at the end of the night
>asked again today
>I really want to say no but she's my supervisor and I don't have plans anyway

It's weird because she seems so put together. Not sure if she's an alcoholic or anything, but she definitely abuses alcohol. We get out the lab in about 4 hours so I'm wondering how to politely say "No because you drink too much" without her getting pissy at me.

Plus side about it though is she's taken a likening to me and I get pretty much 24/7 access to one of the better labs on campus and I don't want to give that up.

There's literally no way you can phrase that with her not getting upset. I find it strange after the whole crying bit she'd propose it again though. It could be her way of trying to normalize the situation. I myself used to abuse alcohol a lot, so I can somewhat understand her line of thinking. Honestly, she's probably leaning on you because she can't on the other people in her social circle, either because she knows she'll overdue it with them and ruin her reputation, or because they already all stopped indulging her.

She wants to have sex with you.
She's getting excessively drunk and hoping you "take advantage of her"
If you do, you may end up with constant hot sex.
But you will also have an extremely awkward situation and her behavior indicates a possible passive-aggressive attempt to deny responsibility that can seriously bite you on the ass.
On the gripping hand: crazy chicks give the best sex

Should I stop then? Like, for her sake? I sort of encouraged it the first week because I was pretty keen to get drunk after a really good week. I figured if she was getting me to go out then she may have exhausted other friends to get shitfaced with.

I could just lie and say I have stuff to do but I can't say that every week.

She's straight, so no chance of that.

I'd either limit the amount of time at the bar, say you can manage a drink or two and leave afterwards for whatever reason, or just explain you really don't drink that much and want to focus on your work.

Oh that could work. Get the tipsy fun stage without the overly drunk period after. I'll probably stay in her good books after that.
>>
>>17569446

Most likely. I found being around people that drank more responsibly than me also helped my own behaviours

LOL (no shit I actually laughed out loud)
I did not figure you are both female.
Yea she has a drinking problem

In my life I have been involved in many things. When I was in college I was in a speed metal band, I was in a fraternity, I very nearly took a different road in my life by coming all the way to the brink of accepting a patch in a biker gang, and I've earned a doctorate. In my life, I have only encountered one group that drinks more heavily than people in graduate school and that was the bikers. Even then, it probably would have been a push if it wasn't for the meth and lack of regard for consequences that kept them going.

You're going to keep running into drinkers. Learn to deal with them or accept that you're not going to network well.

Yeah if I were a guy I'd probably assume she was trying to fuck. She's cute though, would probably consider it if she didn't drink so heavily with me when we were out.

>You're going to keep running into drinkers.
I've got no problem with drinkers. I drink, and drank quite heavily with her on our first night out. I drank with previous lecturers, classmates, never judged them.

But none of them ever broke down in tears on the second night out in front of me. None of them challenged me to shots on the first night out.

You're describing the baseline for a lot of graduate programs. You've got high functioning people fresh out of college under immense pressure but largely insulated from the real world thanks to academia. Drinking to obliteration becomes the norm.

I'm not calling you a lightweight, I'm saying that alcoholism and binge drinking run rampant in graduate programs. You need to make some decisions now about how you're going to navigate the sheer volume of alcoholics and hard drinkers you're likely to encounter.

this is literally how lesbian pornography starts out

I hope you know that

I've just never seen it to this degree before during my honours graduate program. I know a handful of people also doing PhD's/done their PhD's and they never drank like this.

Like I know some weekends I just need to get drunk because of the stress, or perhaps a great week, but this girl is taking it to another level, at least to the point that I'm not comfortable. At least at my university I could cut someone like her off (obviously won't be doing that) and be able to find a hundred different PhD supervisors who don't drink that badly. I really think it's just her who's THIS bad.
