Ever since my mom was introduced to the internet, she's taken a pretty large leap towards paranoia. She's always been a believer in holistic medicine and things like that, but nobody ever told her that ANYONE can put ANYTHING on the internet, and so she's gotten into the habit of watching youtube conspiracy theories.

Normally what she does with her free time wouldn't bother me, but she's 51 and I'm starting to worry that it might be signs of mental illness. We don't have any real family medical history, so I can't be sure. But recently she told me she's practicing an ancient Mayan sun ritual that will purge her of the need to eat, and she genuinely believes the earth is flat, now. And for fucks sake, don't get her started on vaccinations or the illuminati. She also made some slightly antisemitic comments a few weeks ago, which I'm sure won't shock anyone here, but that's certainly not her.

Is there anything I can do besides spend more time with her? I just moved back to help with rent and stuff, but it's grueling being around her because she either talks about insane shit that I cannot possibly have any opinion about, or about incredibly benign shit that I don't give a shit about. She doesn't seem to enjoy listening about my life, I think she just likes talking and having the company, so I let her dominate the conversation often.

She needs a hobby.
>>
Show her mom/son incest porn. She'll never get on a computer again.
>>
>>17560493
Well, wow, i've never had to deal with things like that. my aunt just watch youtube videos about aliens or angels, she eventually realize that's not always true. So hmmm i agree with you, what you are doing is good, maybe, introduce her to a tv show.
Good luck

About a year ago I was experiencing the same thing on a much lesser level. While my mom wasn't practicing rituals, she did spend much of her free time watching YouTube conspiracy theories. All it took was voicing my concerns, and simply explaining that the Internet isn't always trust worthy. She still researches a lot of political conspiracy theories and seems a LITTLE too concerned about the government taking over, but at least it's not the illuminati or reptilians anymore. Your story is a lot more extreme, so no guarantees but try explaining. Do it in a way that doesn't dismiss everything she believes in, but makes her question the SOURCE of the beliefs (the Internet.)

She is a professional (and incredibly talented) artist. She teaches those painting classes where women bring their friends and drink wine. She's an intelligent and graceful lady, it hurts me that she's not acting like herself.

>>17560509
If I expect her behavior to repeat itself, that would probably backfire

>>17560516
I've been meaning to get a Hulu account or something. I watch a lot of cool stuff, maybe I can distract her with some good mystery shows. I'm a little worried that she'll only watch documentaries but at least these ones have production value and some credibility whatsoever.

>>17560520
My mom is extremely stubborn. I needed work on my car once, and had made the appointment with an auto shop that had worked on the car for the previous owner. I asked her for a ride back to (my parents) house so I could kill a few hours. Over the next hour and a half, she twisted my arm into going to some chain-auto shop because "she had a coupon". So I bail on the $100 appointment I had, this other place decides they want to charge me $800. The coupon was for a fucking oil change.

I mean, I can tell her the exact, physical reasons why the earth can't be flat. She literally won't listen to me, but she listens to anonymous youtube tripe. I have to inception her away from this stuff, because I don't want her to live the last half of her life in a state of constant paranoia.
>>
>>17560580
You're wasting your time trying to reason with her. Conspiracy theorists aren't interested in fact or logic. They're only interested in maintaining their delusional worldview with the conspiracy theorist as the intellectual elite who's figured it all out and everyone else as gullible sheep. Telling them that they're wrong, no matter how indisputably you prove it, is telling them that all this time they've been the gullible sheep and have been making total idiots of themselves in front of everyone they know. Their ego can't handle it, so they run and hide.

Personally I'd spend as little time as possible with her.

I agree with you, but this is my mom, man. And this isn't her. I didn't emphasize it much, but I really am leaning towards the idea that it might be early stages of some mental illness.

My brother already spends less time with her, but he's younger and doesn't really need shoulder the burden.

I think loneliness contributes a lot to it. But I can't do it for more than short periods. We smoke weed sometimes which helps.
>>
>>17560645
>some mental illness
Senile dementia + narcissistic personality disorder.
>weed helps
With paranoia? More likely to be a major contributing factor.
>>
>>17560657
She shows narcissistic traits, but I'm not sure about a full-blown narcissist. Still, it's not like the difference is going to matter much.

And I meant weed helps with hanging out with her. But also no, she doesn't get paranoid when she smokes. Hers is more of a kind of...background paranoia, like thinking everyone is lying to you and out to get you. Not the kind that weed gives you.

Introduce her to more of the Internet. 4chan, Reddit, Tumblr, Instagram, other websites. If she trawls long enough and often enough she's going to find SOMETHING that redpills her on at least one of the insane bullshit trips. Sounds like she prefers to listen to some idiot online over her son, so use that to your advantage.
>>
>>17560693
I'd probably send her to Reddit, if anything.

I don't touch that shit personally, but I think it might be better for her. If she comes here, she'll just become another /pol/lock.

Heh, one time we were in the car and she started telling me about the SECRET HACKER GROUP ANONYMOUS. I've been on 4chan since like 2008

Funny thing about conspiracies: if someone is milling the rumor around the internet, it's not a fucking secret.

My fuckwit dad is the same way. He saw some jewtube video about hte world ending due to a comet or some shit coming close enough to earth to reverse its magnetic poles and the gravity would pull everything out of the ground or some shit. He dropped 2 grand he didn't have on a fucking RV and prepper canned food hoard, and he still has the fucking RV and can't sell it. Of course the world didn't end but he never admitted he's a fucktard for believing something a kook put on the interbutt. What a maroon.

Unfortunately you can't cure stupid. My dad just got worse since then, he believes a bunch of crocks of shit and you can't tell him otherwise. Kind of hurts knowing he thinks more highly of some itnernet asshole than of you, so fuck 'im. I just moved away and he can crash and burn on his own. Can't help someone if they aren't willing to admit they have a problem. He's a goddamned moron who hasn't read a fucking book since high school, but he thinks he's always right about everything. Even shit I fucking majored in. Screw him. Sorry anon, just cut contact with your idiot mom, she's too far gone.

OK, I'm no expert, but I have some experience in this field.

Here's the deal, this situation is based in low self esteem, or a need to feel relevant and important.

In most societies, Doctors are put on a pedastal.

>they are smart
>well educated
>often seen as a great catch as a spouse
>they save lives/end pain, etc

People who get into Holistic or Naturopathy might start with decent intentions, but it always ends the same

>big pharma is out to get us
>Dr's are behind the times
>There's no money in cures, only symptom suppression.
>arrogent jerks who don't know eastern/indian/etc

Basically, what your Mother is doing, is creating a pedalstal that makes her BETTER than Doctors.

>she knows the truth
>her intentions are for helping, not profits
>big pharma doesn't own her!

It sounds like this has bled into new age stuff.

>She knows how the world works
>Much spiritual awareness
>The world is an illusion

The fact that she needs you to move in only makes me think that she is going through a tough time, and is clinging to things that separate (and elevate) her above the plebs who have bought into the Zionist/corporate/FDA/etc/etc/etc.

You are going to have to either

1) just let it roll of your back
2) challenge her beliefs.

By the way, there is no convincing anyone of anything, so your best bet is too learn to not let it bug you. She will believe what she wants, and there is nothing you can do.

My mother-in-law is just like your Mother.

>She also made some slightly antisemitic comments a few weeks ago
What did she say?
>>
>>17561349
It's like you know her. Though I should specify, she didn't need me to move in. I moved back to save money on rent, and also so that my rent could go towards the household. I had a difficult last few years, but that's another thing entirely.

>>17561363
She made some passing comments on how the supposed gas chambers couldn't be used as such, and from my understanding there is some controversy over this, but nevertheless she seemed pretty close to saying the word "kike".
>>
Find her some fact based educational YouTube shit that debunks her delusions.

But hey, at least she is enlightened that Bush did 9/11

Most of you American faggots are still blind
>>
>>17561381
>how the supposed gas chambers couldn't be used as such

She's right, you know. Lurk /pol/ moar. 6 million is a jewish kaballah meme magic number. Jews have been talking about 6 million dead jews since the 1800s, and /pol/ has the newspaper clippings to prove it. Just go and ask and they'll dump. I didn't save all the infographics.

New age pseudomed bullshit is all bunk, though. But even a broken clock is right twice a day.

>>17561381
>She made some passing comments on how the supposed gas chambers couldn't be used as such, and from my understanding there is some controversy over this,
The main thing to remember is that NO NAZI. Ever. Ever. Was a Holocaust denier.

This one, simple fact shows that everything the modern deniers try to claim is a silly contrivance. From 1945 onwards, thousands of Nazis were captured and hundreds tried for their part in the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity. They tried to pretend they were someone else, they tried to pretend they didn't know what was happening, they tried to pretend they didn't have as much to do with it as others, they tried to claim they were just following orders and they tried to justify it as "the kind of thing that happens in war." But what NOT ONE of them EVER did was DENY it happened.

Even men on trial for their lives, in the full knowledge they would be hanged if convicted, never stood up in the courtroom and shouted "This is all a lie! This is a fabrication! There were no gas chambers and no crematoria! I'M BEING FRAMED!!!!" On the contrary, they gave great detail as to precisely how they had helped build and helped run the mechanics of mass murder, some of them even seeming proud of how they had achieved something so complex and on such a vast scale.

Look man I don't give a shit one way or the other. My point is, what the fuck does it even matter to her? Even if it's true, the only thing it's doing is fueling her paranoia.
>>
>>17561396
It wasn't on purpose, bush needs a break.
>>
Maybe get her to make a youtube account and start making videos? That might put into perspective that anyone can put videos up.
