Wondering as well (since face=identity) if you devalue people, ot think low of them, etc. you get the idea.

It's a minor variation on the Knight In Shining Armor fantasy. You want a mysterious lover with no past and no real identity to come out of nowhere and sweep you off your feet, and then disappear into the mists.

Very common in its various forms - look at all the romance paperbacks, Bridget Jones movies and TV costume dramas.

In part it's just an innocent romantic fantasy. On another it's a variant on what Erica Jong called the 'zipless fuck' - the sexual encounter that overwhelms you and therefore isn't your fault.

sounds like possible intimacy issues to me, either stemming from social anxiety or self esteem issues. masks tend to dehumanize the person they're on, making it less stressful and harder to fuck up in a social setting because you can't read them in the first place, putting that performance anxiety to rest. it's also possible that someone like this is less likely to hurt you, when you're able to shape the personality of the 'person behind the mask', so to say.
