I need to fly to a friend's wedding in a month. His wedding's on a Saturday and in a Dutch city I've never been to before (I live in Europe). Should I fly in the day before, or two days before to get the lay of the land a bit and prepare, maybe see him first? Also, I'm thinking of leaving Monday, so I can recover/do some sightseeing Sunday.
Two days. Day one to get an idea where the wedding will be taken place and the local area for the after party.
Day 2 for travelling and experience the culture. Soak up as much as you can and enjoy yourself because you won't be coming here ever again. Hell if you can make it 3 days that would be better for your experiences honestly.

Which city?
I mean, Dutch cities are tiny compared to some other countries' cities. We judge what is and isn't a city based on whether or not the place in question has Medieval city rights. In official terms, we don't use the definition of "city", but just municipality, hence the old definition sticks. And sometimes people just calling a big place a "city".
So unless you're going to Amsterdam or Rotterdam, you're probably going to a small place where it's easy to find your way around.

Maastricht.
Already booked for two days in advance. It'll go down like this:
Thurs: Fly there, settle in
Fri: Sightsee
Sat: Wedding
Sun: Recover, sightsee, maybe bang an escort
Mon: Fly out

Oh, Maastricht isn't particularly huge. It's been around since Roman times, and it's a Southern city, so there should be enough to see. I've only been to the one coffeeshop near the central railway station, though, so there's nothing I can recommend.
