Has anyone here ever called the suicide prevention hotline?

What was it like?

Seems to me like a waste of time if you are actually going to kill yourself; like what does it matter if some well-meaning person on the other side of the country doesn't want you to do it?

I tried. waste of time.

They actually put me on hold
>>
Put me on hold for ages as well
Wanted to die lol
>>
Called an advice nurse once and she called the cops on me and I was committed to the mental hospital for 72-hour hold.they Took my shoes, stole my change and tried to get me to sign a paper "to be released" without reading it that was actually a form stating that I would voluntarily stay an additional two weeks. They're criminal.
>>
I haven't called them but it seems more like a service for do-gooders to pat themselves on the back and pretend they helped someone.

Maybe they keep teenagers from killing themselves but it just seems to me, as an adult, like "what the fuck are these people going to do for me?"

What did you tell them? That seems like an extreme response for "I want to die, please talk to me."

I've heard that it's better if you call local lines instead of national ones. National ones are more well known and get more calls. So they've got longer 'wait lists' so to speak. I've never called nor had to call though.
>>
I called one before. I got someone who sounded like he was reading pre-written, cliche things off a sheet of paper, and wouldn't let me TALK, he didn't want to listen. It didn't help me feel any better. I just wanted someone to listen and be there for as long as I needed, which I thought was the point of it all. But they don't care. Not a bit of empathy. The people on the end of the line are inhuman and I suggest not wasting your time calling. It'll only make you feel worse in your time of need

>The people on the end of the line are inhuman
Or they may genuinely think it's better for you if they follow the script, because they have no fucking clue what you really want. They can't give you your gf back, they can't pay your debts, all they have is a fucking script. Believe it or not, no one truly knows how to deal with a suicide case.

I know a guy who volunteers at one of the places taking calls because he needs to do "community service" to keep his scholarship. So basically you are talking to some college kid that's there because he has to be somewhere. At least, according to him.

>a waste of time
May be all you need to reconsider.
>>
>Has anyone here ever called the suicide prevention hotline?
Yes.

>What was it like?
They told me to do a backflip and stream it on periscope.
>>
I called them once during a lucid moment I was having amidst a period of depression. It felt really suspicious. I thought I was going to be calling people and they'd tell me that I was going to be okay, but they kept asking what I planned to do to kill myself and if I had any guns, or whether I was in immediate danger. I immediately got very suspicious and on-guard and I just wanted to drop the conversation. They wanted to do follow up calls and the like, and were asking questions about phone numbers, emails, zip codes, and I did NOT want them removing my anonymity in the situation.

tl;dr they weren't a big help

What kind of facility wants to trick a patient into staying longer? I have friends that have worked in that kind of place, and it sounds like they got a revolving door set up they just love to throw people out through, because there are not enough beds for everybody and they can only keep the more serious cases. Like, what'd you do or say that was that bad they wanted you to stick around so much?
