Thinking about joining the army. I'm currently 18 and I sorta have my life planned out. After I researched what other countries are like I really want to help and defend my nation. I would have already done it if it wasn't for two reasons. I am kinda skinny, I can work this out though, and my mother has always been very anxious/nervous. She was very protective of me growing up and I don't think she can bear it if I go for a dangerous job. Thoughts?
you're american?

Yes, I'm American

Yeah.
> air force for a cushy job/life maybe get a trade
> navy for a trade
> army for a trade and do solider shit
> marines for brotherhood

then if you do go in join the coast guard, they're the only branch that genuinely defends the nation and helps other americans, I was in the navy but if I could go back and do it again I would have gone CG. There's nothing wrong with the navy but it's very peacekeeping focused, which is to say mainly doing patrols on the other side of the world to be seen and get everyone else to play nice. In the CG you're actually right off the coast of america fighting drug smugglers, and human traffickers, and when people have emergencies on the water you rush out to help them.
Don't join the army or marines, first of all there's no war on so you wont actually be doing the job you sign up for. Second of all the wars we fight simply aren't worth dying for.

army is much more than foot soldier/rifleman desu. It depends on what country you live in and what role you're going for, some armies life is really nice and well paid, for others it's really shitty. The U.S is generally one of the shitty ones for non-engineer, non-scientist and non-specialist stuff. Your role might not be directly dangerous, and your going to be doing nothing interesting or dangerous most of the time if you do have a combat role. This will probably contribute to how your mother reacts. You'll just have to talk to your mother about it, just bring up the idea at first, not anything decided. Maybe she wont react favourably, but the intention will be planted. Just keep talking to her about it if she doesn't like it, till she begins to accept it. Don't just tell her bluntly then try leave the next week.
