So last night I got woken up in the middle of the night by my neighbours having a loud conversation. Still half-asleep I got up and yelled at them to shut up, which they did.
Looking back now I feel like it was a bit unnecessary, as there were only a few of them and they weren't talking that loud, it's more that their yard where they sit is right next to my bedroom window. When this has happened in the past I've only had to ask them politely to be quiet and they've seemed apologetic about it and complied.
So, is it worth knocking on their door and apologizing? I hardly know them so there's no relationship there to salvage, I'm more worried about things being awkward when I walk past their place, or that they won't be so compliant next time I ask them to be quiet.
It wouldn't hurt to apologize. Just say "hey sorry I was a dick last night, idk why I snapped like that. Anyway, have a good afternoon."

One time, a woman was yelling for someone to call 911. But it was like 9 in the morning, and I was working graveyard shift, so I just shut the window and went back to sleep. I never felt the need to apologize for that, so I think you're fine.

Sounds alright, I guess this will help to smooth it over as well as hopefully driving home the point that chatting and laughing loudly outside on a weeknight is pretty uncool.
You don't need to apologize. They were being loud enough in the middle of the night to wake someone up, and they got told to shut up; they're probably thankful the cops weren't called or something.
If someone yelled at me to shut up as I was talking in the backyard, I'd feel bad I didn't realize we were being that loud.
They probably neither remember nor care that you did it.
