Does anyone have any reliable methods to quitting excessive drinking and other similar vices?
I used to drink alone every night after work, heavily, and I can't really remember why I started. I met some new friends and now I drink every night just the same, but with them. It's a happy/social experience, but it's still excessive drinking nonetheless and I often drink far more than any of them just out of habit.
I also smoke a pack a day and I would love to ween myself if not quit entirely.
How do I stop habits like these when they've become semi-positive social experiences? I don't get stupid or aggressive or sad when I'm drunk, I don't lose my wallet or phone or waste god-awful amounts of money, I just get drunk and feel positive.
I know it's terrible for my health though. I just enjoy the friendships I have and continue to make in public drinking settings/smoking.

There's your problem. You start by saying you want to stop and by the end of a few sentences you've convinced yourself it's not a big deal, in fact it's a positively good thing because you make friends and it's a social activity.
This my friend, is a classic sign of alcoholism.
you could start out by just drinking the same about as your friends, you'll probably have just as good of a time, try cultivating a hobby or talent that will bring you happiness, as you become more happy about life over time the need to get high from alcohol and cigs will diminish
