Why do people who are not christian, have christenings? my friend had a christening for his baby a few days ago, i went to support him. However, he doesent even believe in any of it. its like me sacrificing some goats to zeus for a laugh. his family also isnt religious, and its not like he enjoyed the event.

To keep you brainwashed people guessing.

In some countries/communities it is just a ritual to get people together and celebrate the new born.
It doesn't even have a strong religious meaning anymore.
>>
>>17440897
couldent they literally just have a party and say "yeah, its to celebrate the babys birth". its not like you can talk with people during the christening. i think its pretty stupid desu lol. if they are going to do it, they should at least be religious.

It's a matter of tradition - here it is very uncommon to have a party to celebrate the baby's birth, but everyone gets christened.
Usually, you have a party after the christening and spend a few hours together, have lunch together and drink. People bring presents for the new born and you celebrate.
It's just the accepted tradition, stupid or not.
>>
Where I live, everybody christens their babies, whether you believe or not. It's just a thing you do.
>>
>OP not killing baby

What world are you in?
>>
>>17440906
i get what you mean, though i think people should not do things solely because its common courtesy. yeah, they did have an after party but it was pretty shit, and they made it for the kids, even though there was literally about 5 kids there and its retarded if they done it for the baby because it wont even remember it.
>>
Well on a purely pragmatic basis being Christened doesn't exclude you from anything but, depending on where you live, many schools that have a Christian ethos, which include some very good public and private schools, won't take non-Christened children.
>>
>>17440927
Well, whatever? People like to do it and keep their traditions. Christening is one of those in pretty much all Catholic countries.
It's just a way to stay together. There's no reason to be such an edgy fedora tipping atheist. You celebrate the newborn, spend 100$ on a shitty gold bracelet he will sell to buy drugs when he's 18 and that's it.

Christmas is a religious holiday but a lot of non-religious people celebrate it. Shit, I was raised in a very secular household and I get excited for Christmas in November.

>Christmas is a religious holiday but a lot of non-religious people celebrate it.
thats different though, its a comercial holiday, people do it because its fun to get people presents, and people like the whole atmosphere of it.

>People like to do it and keep their traditions
but they are not really following a tradition because they are not christian, and they are supporting something they dont even follow. im not an athiest lol, and its more edgy to do something because "meh, my dad did it" than to think of an alternative. i dont care if people are religious but its retarded to follow a religious tradition with out following the beliefs.

It is not JUST a religious tradition.
Surely religion has a role in it, but it is also just a tradition for certain communities.
Where I live, EVERYONE gets christened and EVERYONE goes to Bible studies.
It is mostly a way to socialise - when a large part of your community life revolves around religious traditions, you stick to them because it becomes your community tradition, even if you don't follow said religion.
I am italian, I was christened even if my parents and my grandparents are atheist, I went to bible classes because ALL my friends went and I wanted to play with them after the class.
It am not Catholic, but I am a part of my community so I did most of the things that other people did.

not for where i live. i dont know a single person that goes to church or is actually religious.

Going to church and being actually religious has nothing to do with adhering to certain community life aspects that derive from religious traditions.
Christening, marriage, a lot of popular city festivals, Carnival, Halloween, Christmas are all things that are important for the community and derive from the religious traditions.
You don't NEED to be religious to do those things.
