What is the proper way to shower?
Am I supposed to use bar soap or "body wash?"
Am I supposed to use a washcloth or a loofah or something else?
How often am I supposed to wash the washing implement that I choose?
How long should a shower take?

Erm, I heard cold showers are better for you. As far as shower length goes, idk, 10 to 15 mins, just don't overdo it and be clean
Use good soap. I like Dove and Avene. Make sure you exfoliate your skin prob once every other day. I recommend buying a Clarisonic, it's a bit pricey though. You can also use a Konjac sponge or a wash cloth.
For shampoo, just check if it has Sulfate. It dries out my scalp, so I get Shampoos that don't have it

How do you currently shower? Is there any reason that needs to change? Is there anything undesirable you want to avoid, or something desirable you want to achieve?
Aint broke, don't fix it. And if it is broke, troubleshoot it before just going to town.

Sometimes my back gets a super prickly itchy sensation. I think this might have to do with not showering well.
I figured this would be a good time to assess my whole technique.

Sounds like you're drying out your skin and just need some moisturiser. Soaps and exfoliators would likely only exacerbate this issue. Some light exfoliating and mild soap-free body wash might be good to get rid of dead skin contributing to itching, but only if followed by moisturising.
Lowering the water temperature is also generally a good idea.
Switching to a sensitive-skin or soap-free shampoo/conditioner may also help, since the suds will be running down your back and potentially drying/irritating your skin.
