Just need some hollow needles. Swab the area with some alcohol wipes or something. I'd mark where you want your holes with a pen first. When your ready, push quickly and without hesitation and you should be fine. But I would recommend having some help.

It is dangerous and people charge money for it specifically because its a procedure that requires skill and tools that you don't own. If you could do it at home safely and easily piercing shops wouldn't exist.
I really don't get this. People don't mind spending thousands of dollars on collectibles and gaming computers and other trivial bullshit but when it comes to their health and body safety they're always looking for a fucking deal.
If you want to risk fucking your ear up permanently, go for it. If you want to guarantee that it will be done safely and properly then don't be a fucking cheap ass and just spend the money on it.

I've pierced my ear exactly twice, once at a jewelry store in a mall and once in a dorm bathroom, when my friend just stuck an ice cube on my ear and shoved a piercing stud through it.
The home-made version, even with an alcohol swab, got ferociously infected and had to be removed from a swollen, bleeding, pussy mess with forceps by a nurse at the university health center.
Maybe it won't happen to you. My friend who pierced me had done it to himself a bunch of times--including some seriously risky stuff like piercing his own penis--and never had a problem. But it seems like a lot of risk and potential hassle to save like $20.
Get it done by a professional. Infection is a bitch, and it's way less likely to happen in a professional setting. Besides, they can set you up with some aftercare shit usually. It's worth the price. Trust me.
