What are the chances of survival from a stroke?

An old (75) relative of mine who is a heavy drinker and smoker just got admitted into the hospital from a stroke, and I'm worried.

Is there a chance he'll be okay?

You can survive a stroke however every consecutive one thereafter weakens the muscles in and around your heart decreasing your chances of surviving another.

It really depends, above everything else, on how soon he got medical attention.

I'm afraid that's like asking how long is a piece of string. Strokes come in so may different forms and degrees of intensity that anything from full recovery to imminent death is possible. The doctor treating him can make the best guess about the specifics of this case.
