I'm leaving home to live independently in my own flat. What are the things I need to consider and watch out for so this works out?
Some general advice about moving out of my parent's house
your monthly income should be atleast 3x your rent

This. Everything else pretty much takes care of itself. If that means you have to have a tiny room in a shared house, so be it.
1/3 for rent, 1/3 to save, 1/3 for expenses. That's a good starter ratio. Soon you'll be living off last year's money. Also, if you do have roommates (and perhaps especially if you do) never eat anything other than beans and rice or perhaps oatmeal around them. Roommates get jealous as fuck in a hurry when they see you eating far above them, and they get nasty.
Don't leave your toiletries in the bathroom. People jerk off into conditioner just for fun.
Don't cook, they'll want your food, and don't leave anything in the refrigerator because it will be eaten/stolen/fucked with. This also goes for cutlery, pots and pans, etc. It doesn't matter how nice they seem, sooner or later they'll get the muchines and be too lazy to go to the store. You don't want having a roof over your head to hinge on something you knew better to avoid.

I have never, ever encountered anything like this and I've lived in a lot of shared houses, most with roommates I found off Craigslist

>craigslist
No, they just put cameras in the bathroom.
My experiences were in the days before Craigslist, but I see no reason for human nature to have changed much.
It's called hiding your power level, and serves very well particularly when you have to share a toilet with someone.

Live minimally and save as much money as possible.
