I'm supposed to testify in a trial that will receive a bit of media attention. I don't want to specify exactly what it is, but it's race related.
I have some conversation with my friend through steam chat over the years that are pretty racially charged. It will definitely hurt the case even though I'm not lying about anything. Do they keep archives? What are the chances the lawyers will find that?

I don't have any saved logs, and I assume my friends doesn't either. I'm just wondering if steam has a database of them
Lawyer here. Destroying evidence is itself a crime, just to remind you.
I doubt it will even occur to the lawyers to subpeona steam chat logs, and I doubt a service as large as steam keeps logs of random conversations for longer than a couple of weeks, If they keep them at all

This. Lawyer here also. Just tell the truth, there is no way of knowing if any party is privy to any log files if you aren't aware of any discovery or evidence being presented during the trial.
A court is where you go to tell the truth, it is not up to you to decide who should be told what, just answer the questions truthfully and let the judge and jury decide the fate of the case.

Steam keeps a 10 year logging history. It's not just device capability, it is account based, which means they store on their servers.
