First of all, ALWAYS BARTER.
Second, you should ask if he's willing to do for 800. From there, you can negotiate.
About the car, no clue, but it's a Benz, so I guess it has it's worth.

>always barter
Of course, i know a decent amount about craigslist but im more concerned about the car being worth bartering for.
This car could be worth 50 bucks for all i know and i would have no idea.
First car looks better desu
an 20+ year old BMW? hell no that's not a good idea. 1500 or 1000 does not matter much if you think about the fortune that it's going to cost to keep running. and by fortune I mean: fortune.
and that rusty old civic is a ripoff at 1000

Read the sticky on /o/. That helped me a ton when I bought my first used car.
I also looked at youtube videos on how to inspect a used car.
What you should do, is inspect the car thoroughly, and use the things that are wrong with it to dock the price.
For example, when I bought my used car, I checked under the hood, the tires, and the surroundings of the car. The tires were worn, the brakes squeaked and it had a key scratch down the side. I honestly didn't give a shit about the scratches, but I knocked of a few hundred because I have to replace the tires soon and had to replace the front brakes.
