How can you tell if someone is really your friend? I have this horrible feeling that someone I recently became friends with (they were making all the effort) isn't really a friend but is just playing along and laughing with their friends behind my back
Call him at 3:30 AM, tell him you have a problem and you want to hit the bar and talk about it.
Alternative: tell him you're fucked and need a medium/large sum of money borrowed.
Both of those things usually turn fake friends away.

a real friend wouldn't give you free money

I'm not that guy, but when I thought about it I realized I WOULD do this if a friend asked.

It's not giving, it's borrowing. If your friend literally can buy food and will get evicted because of a tragedy or the loss of a job and was THAT desperate to ask you for help, wouldn't you lend him?

*can't
Can't do the money test since the friend in question doesn't have a job and I have an alright one, so me needing to borrow money from them just isn't going to happen.
Also can't just go for a beer at some early hour as I live a few states away.
Friend is female and I'm male if that makes any difference, but I haven't any reason to suspect she's using me for monetary gain.
