When you decide if you should or shouldn't do something, what things should you consider? These are some things I can think of clearly:
>Whether you have a desire to do it (or not do it)
>Whether you have a moral obligation or responsibility to do it (or not do it)
>The objective/physical consequences of doing it (or not) (e.g. physical addiction, bodily harm, scorn or judgement from others, jail time, etc, but not something vague like "it'd mess my mind up")

There is a fourth point I can't decide if it makes sense. It's trying to account for that lurking "it'd mess my mind up." This is it:
>The social implications of the action (different from actual scorn or judgement from others because it doesn't require others). Basically your internalized standards and how you see yourself as a part of society and as a person defined by their establishment of themselves in society

What do you guys think of this final point? Is it something we all (or at least most) have and considers, as social animals? Is it something someone should ideally free themselves from to live more in accordance with their own desires and standards, or is it underrated and do people not appreciate their obligation to work within society, to the point of making bad and reckless decisions for their mental health?

Oh yeah, also, anything else one should consider in generalized decision making
>>

what? such a broad question, for literally any action you take.
>>
>>17373287
Not really... it's a context free question, but not exactly broad. Decision making is pretty nebulous and unconscious but it also makes sense to try to understand the considerations that do or should go into it.

Basically I ask because there's something I'm trying to decide about that I should do by considering the first three points but I still don't want to do. So it's a huge riddle to me.

>but not exactly broad
>literally any action you could ever take, any decision you could ever make
>whats the guidelines

yes, it is exactly broad.
>>
>>17373279
>what things should you consider?
>fourth point
>making bad and reckless decisions for their mental health

Give me an example, OP. I'm struggling to think of an example that would conflict the two
>>

>>17373296
Think big ass decisions you really can't come to a conclusion on, like no shit this is going to seem like a ridiculous question if the decision is to buy milk or not
>>
>>17373303
Like uh, I guess a weird fetish would qualify. Like it's not wrong, it's not dangerous, and it's something you want to do, but maybe you still feel like you aren't sure if you would feel like a good or proper person if someone was shitting on you.

Not the context I'm thinking of it in for what it's worth, but an example
>>
>>17373302
yeah, it'd be broad if I were asking for the answer to literally any decision, but I'm not, I'm asking about general criteria dumbass
>>
>>17373317
I guess what I'm most looking for from this thread could best be described in the context of this example. How do you characterize the thing that stands in the way of getting shat on if that's what you want?
>>
>>17373317
Not at all in that case

If you see yourself as not a good person etc because of that, then that's guilt in my opinion, and different from your view of yourself in society

In the same way as people feel guilty after watching porn sometimes ("urgh, I feel disgusting")... But that's nothing to do with that person's view of themself in society
>>
>>17373346
What accounts for the guilt though? If it's not that you did something wrong, and it's not that others are judging you, why would you feel guilty? I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out. I feel it must have something to do with internalized standards and an idea of what society is like. Otherwise, I can't explain or justify it.

And this leads to the other question in the OP- is this guilt something to take seriously or not?
>>
>>17373352
You feel guilty because it's shit, and shit has always been something you hide away, don't talk about, and something that generally offends people

>>17373352
>is this guilt something to take seriously or not?
identify why you feel the guilt. If you consider it a legitimate reason, then sure, take it seriously. If not, ignore it
>>
>>17373365
OK, thanks, I still think it's directly related to societal standards though, since society is what says shit is dirty and offensive.

I appreciate
>identify why you feel the guilt. If you consider it a legitimate reason, then sure, take it seriously. If not, ignore it
a lot though, as it's the first concrete answer to that question I've gotten, probably because it's hard for me to phrase. I suppose I shouldn't take the guilt too seriously then, but still, who knows if it'll come back to bite you in the ass a few guilt inducing decisions on...
>>
>>17373385
>society is what says shit is dirty and offensive.
Mostly because of the underlying medical reasons. It's associated with disease. Society became educated about this, triumphed when they developed good plumbing, and celebrated the decline of related disease. I guess people would see it as a step back if it became commonplace to curl one out on the pavement of a busy street... But what others do in private is more acceptable than you think, I believe. I certainly have an issue with someone shitting on my driveway... Not so with someone shitting on someone else behind their own walls

Don't worry about things coming back to bite you too much either
