The problem is thagt he broadcasts desperation and worthlessness. If he feels no girl will ever love him, then something in his behavior or body language will give off "I'm un-love-worthy" signals.

Girls will overlook his looks if he's attractive in other ways. They can't help being repelled by "loser" vibes.

Not much you can do as a friend. No one likes to be told that they have little to offer and that is ultimately what you mean. The other anons are right, everyone likes a cute guy or girl but all the more for a man it is ultimately about the bigger picture. If you are astoundingly smart, acknowledged and charming, that in itself is enough to make you incredibly attractive for many women. Obviously this is not his case.

If he asks, I'd pointedly say that you don't want to offend him, but perhaps he should think about how much he expects from a partner (because I'm sure he wouldn't be happy with a hot bimbo who's cranky all the time and hates sex... so being hot is merely the entry level bar) versus how much he can realistically offer as a boyfriend compared to other guys. If you get more crude than that he is just going to get defensive and deflect anyway, being able to take personal criticism graciously is extremely rare all the more in young people.
