I want to start writing. I like the horror genre. Can anyone give me a 'skeleton' structure for a horror novel? I'm doing such searching too currently. If I can get a structure going ill be all good to go

read more books

it's the only way really, there is no shortcut, only if you want to write mediocre things

Look at creepypasta's...

They have the same sort of structure as a long joke;
>Introduction to the characters involved.
>Gradually building suspense.
>An apparent "end" that ties things off seemingly well and luls the audience into a false sense of security.
>The punchline that knocks them on their ass.

Makes sense when you think about it. I remember reading in psychology today how they did a study of "creepy" things and found that an "ambiguity" of whether something is dangerous or not is what defines creepy.

With this in mind, I have also read that our ability to laugh was actually sign to let other apes know things are safe. It is theorised that monkeys would laugh, if say, they heard a rustling in some bushes, got scared, only to find out it was a bird, this would let others in the pack know that it's safe.

This seems to reflect that horror and humour may be to sides of the same coin, often coming first from a place of "ambiguity" of safety/danger...
So it stands to reason that a good horror story would be similar in structure to a good joke.

Hope this helped.
