Is the process to change your first name difficult in the U.S? I basically just want to anglicize my name. (I heard it costs $435 in California... which sucks cause I'm a college student)
There's no general "in the U.S." for this. It varies from one county to the next. Generally speaking, however, it's only difficult if you have something to hide or you come across a very grumpy judge.

Basically this op. As for costs, look into waivers for your county. I know some of them will waive the fees if you make under a certain amount.
Anon you don't have to change your name to Matt. You can substitute Matt for your real name.
