Of the choices you gave. If I applied myself, I think I've got two or three other options that would compete ... but, they're not real mainstream. For example, I think Nanase-Elliot/Ellen-Ashley is effectively "3" if considered technically. Superior in every way, including 'incest' even. Don't forget he's also doing http://www.egscomics.com/egsnp.php at least three times a week simultaneously. Even when those strips aren't canon, they usually still advance the EGS storyline(s) and universe.

Compare to another strip, such as Girl Genius, and Dan is doing the work that takes three or four people at Foglio Studios.

Personal guess? Some time during the Grace's Birthday Party arc he solidified numerous storylines he wanted to pursue as canon. Not saying he didn't modify or (probably) retcon some of it as it progressed. But, I get the "feel" that all of EGS up through that birthday party arc was Dan developing characters & with some ideas of what else would happen in the EGS universe. Following his commentaries, though, and you can see he's constantly thinking through, researching & revising to avoid continuity traps & present the more important bits.

As discussed, he didn't script things out until this current arc, but he's clearly had ideas and a thick notebook on what he wants to do & how (most of) it's connected.

From Dec 2006, the sketchbook appears to reveal a planned 'relationship' between Ed Verres and Lavender, something that didn't get revealed as canon until earlier this year (late last year?) in EGS-NP (the Zombie Apocalypse discussion).

If he had that sort of detailed planned back then, it says a lot about how much of the rest of the comic has been planned out. I expect most of the delay between his ideas and publication are "merely" several years of refinement.

Yeah she's basically allied with the group... but that makes me wonder what she was helping the shadow guy try to do against elliot and ellen. She certainly seemed concerned when she thought cheerlreadra was hurt but my guess before was shadow man wanted something detrimental to them.

In any case, her unpredictability makes her a general threat still, I think.
