I don't know how I feel about Roundscape.

On one hand, I find myself fully engaged in the story.
On the other hand, I'm well aware of the fact that the story is cliche as fuck, especially in a fantasy setting.

Sometimes the moral choices are cut and dry. Like "Save Durst, or save Lankin?" Which is fine.
Sometimes the moral choices don't matter, like with "Save Sandra, or don't save Sandra?"
Because even if you save her, she ends up killing herself. So no matter what, the choice has no weight beyond affection and corruption meters.
And then other times, they're just retarded and make no sense, like choosing to sacrifice Meredith or not for literally no reason (Why would you willingly sacrifice your white mage, a source of erotic scenes, and the best waifu in the game?)

And then of course, you have companion corruption.
Ruksana and Meredith's personalities change drastically when they're corrupt enough. Meanwhile the rest of them don't seem to change at all.

Sometimes the porn is amazing, sometimes it's terrible, and sometimes it's bland.
And I only speak of the actual artwork.
The writing in the porn scenes ranges from terrible to "Okay I guess", and I often find myself mentally correcting grammar and spelling errors in my head throughout any given scene.

The combat...Exists. Hopefully the MV conversion will at least make it better.

Renpy games have as much gameplay to them as you care to code. It's extremely flexible, it's just that the default stuff is fairly basic and many developers don't push it. Anything you can do in RPG maker you can do in Renpy, you just have to write or steal the code to do so.

I don't make a habit of trying every Renpy game out there, but I hang out on their development boards enough to know that the coding has been done before, and since it's open source you can just steal it.

Basically, there are a lot of things that are super easy in Renpy, like showing images, moving them around a little, displaying text and menus, that's all built in. But anything you can do in Python you can add to a Renpy game, which basically lets you do almost anything you'd want.

Of course, if I'm playing a porn game, moving a 16-bit sprite around on a world map isn't my highest priority, but if it matters to you, it's totally doable.

Well, that's their business, my point is just that it's not a limitation of the engine, and if someone wants to make something complex, they have all the tools to do so.

A 16-bit RPG map system is relatively tricky in Renpy, but it's been done. A more "point and click" map system is much easier, and largely accomplishes the same thing, from a gameplay sense.

A turn based FF-style combat system is relatively easy in Renpy, and plenty of people have made engines for it. I don't really see the need for combat in a porn game though, I mean, if you want it, that's fine, but it's hardly necessary to make the game fun.

It all just depends on how flexible it is to change. The engine is there to simplify the most basic stuff so you don't have to do it from scratch. RPG Maker is designed for making 16-bit Square games, and anything else you want to do have to be bolted on. Renpy is designed to make VNs, and anything else you want to do needs to be bolted on. Most of the gameplay aspects of a Square RPG can be done in Renpy relatively easy though. Maybe the VN stuff can be added to RPGMaker easilly too, I don't know. The point is, you have the tools to make the game you want.

Then he gets Yu Yu Hakusho'd on the second day and suddenly we're dealing with demons and Egyptian goddesses and furry people and orcs and shit.

Now they likely won't, it's low risk, like surfers getting attacked by sharks, but you can be sued over anything, even something without ANY merit, and then it's up to the courts to determine the outcome. At minimum you'd be spending hundreds, if not thousands in court fees if you tried to fight it, which is why most people just cave if they don't have too much riding on it.

If their case is REALLY bad then you might be able to get a lawyer to go pro-bono on the basis that he could countersue and make money off that, but you're fighting uphill from the start.

Really your strongest defense is not the merits of their case against you, it's in you not being worth their time, since they know they would spend thousands to fight you, and you would likely not be able to pay them back even if they won. However, virtually nobody will sue an artist because someone commissioned him 55 dollars to drawn a nude bust of a character. That sort of lawsuit isn't worth it.
Basically, it all amounts to—

That's actually not true. It's a distinction between Trademark and Copyright. A Trademark is something like a name. "Spider-Man" is trademarked, while "the guy who wears red and blue webbed spandex, etc." is copyrighted. The law says you MUST defend Trademarks, otherwise the name can become generic. This is a far too common misconception, usually from people that would like to get free things and get butthurt at the idea of people making money off their art.

No, profit has NOTHING to do with copyright claims. If something is valid parody, then you can make nothing off of it or ten million dollars off of it, and the law would treat it as legal. If it is not valid parody then it doesn't matter whether you make ten million dollars off it or just gave it away, you'd still be on the hook.

When companies sue, it typically has nothing to do with how much money you made, but rather with how much they believe you damaged their brand, how much money you cost them. Giving things away for free is absolutely ZERO protection in a copyright lawsuit, and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

Now it is true that if you did make millions of dollars then they'd likely come after you because they'd know you had a lot to take, but that's something else entirely from whether they COULD or not.
