Would disagree; there are games with good writing, gameplay, and art, and actual gaming.

Xenotake, I know I've mentioned a million times, but I think it has decent writing, non-grinding gameplay, solid animations, and so forth. The gameplay on it is pretty basic, but overall, it's pretty decent, IMO.

I also realize I've mentioned it a ton of times before, but Future Fragments is currently getting a huge update to the game's engine, with 50 powerups, a real-time algorithm that adjusts enemy difficulty/health based on your performance, a massive shift in the writing/storyline to be more "showing along with telling" (as in, cutscenes with full audio and animations), a branching storyline path that actually affects future cutscenes/enemies/levels based on what choices you pick earlier on (with a minimum of 10 events per level), multiple utility abilities, and the list goes on and on with all the stuff we've added to it that'll be put in (in chunks), in demos going forward.

Pretty much aiming to make it a game that people would want to play not only to fap to, but for the storyline and gameplay as well, but of course we won't be able to please everyone.

(And before people think this is going to take ages to implement, we've already got the artwork/writing for most of this done, and the base structure of the code is already in too, just need to flesh it out some.)

Talia is the only playable character, but we're actually altering her hair slightly (it'll still be short, though). There is a rival character that's long-haired; the gif in this post is what she looks like, and she does get fucked numerous times in the game.

I only stated that I think a content-based pledging structure is more fair than monthly. In a year and a half, I've ran ONE pledge, ONE. CURRENTLY it doesn't have one-handed controls unless you want to mess with the .data file some to reconfigure the controls, but future versions will have reconfigurable controls so if you wanted, you could put everything on one side of the keyboard.

We'll have a gallery of course though, and all the cutscenes are one-button. (Our hope though again is that the game is quality enough as a GAME that you'll want to actually play it for playing it alongside wanting to fap to it.)

The part of owning up to mistakes is related to the "but look at the others" thing.
You miss a deadline? You don't try to make excuses/come up with an explanation nobody can confirm. You simply say something along the lines of
"I apologise for missing this deadline. I fucked up and underestimated the amount of work this would take/overestimated the amount of time I would have."
Explaining it too much will just look like you are trying to have people not blame you. Now your problem is all the other guys on Patreon making excuses as well. We have seen far too many so far, so even if it is your first time, you will get a lot of shit as people are tired of it.
And even if it really is someone else's fault, you do what I just said above. I know it sucks to take the blame for something you have no control over, but otherwise you will just run into the same problem.
And honestly, if you ordered and paid for something, do you really care about why they can't deliver, or do you care about them doing everything in their power to rectify the situation (which you did by offering refunds) and deliver as fast as possible while conducting themselves like professionals?
Yes, you are somewhat of an amateur, but now money is part of the equation and that changes a lot of things, including expectations and people feeling entitled to what they gave you money for (despite your offer), so you will just have to carry yourself like it were a legitimate business you are running.
I really don't envy the position you are in here, it sucks, but you'll have to deal with it somehow.

My advise would be to not set release dates anymore but instead communicate progress regularly, like giving updates on accomplishments every other day/every week (and stick to the schedule) and highlighting milestones you reached. If you want to go into the future, only give what you are currently working towards.

You can do what I did, which is get a virtual machine (I use VMWare) with a japanese OS (I use Ryonani XP) and just do all of your installing and playing of japanes games there. It solves needing to switch around settings every time you play or install something.

A few reasons.

The Japanese have literally 20+ sites to sell their games on, all with massive market exposure that get visited by hundred of thousands or even millions people a day.
Conversely, Western games have Patreon and DLSite as the only true viable sources to make money off of western games without any barriers to entry.
(There are a number of other sites that let you sell in the west, but all of them require actual acceptance to the site, i.e. your game has to be pretty solid quality in most cases to be allowed on those sites for sale.)

Another reason is cultural exposure; you ask almost Japanese person that knows what a computer is, and they'll know what eroge games are as well. This means much, much higher rate of sales and possibilities to make a living off of your game.
Conversely, the majority of Westerners have no idea people actually fap to anime/cartoons/3D, let alone that there's a small, but quickly growing market for it.

To give an analogy, imagine hentai devs as seaweed farmers. In Japan, a vast majority of the population not only knows what edible seaweed is, they consume it frequently, and it's shipped out to thousands upon thousands of restaurants. So, seaweed farmers can make solid income there.
Compare that to someone trying to make a living off of seaweed farming in the USA or Europe, where a much smaller demographic of people even knows you can eat seaweed, and an even smaller percentage actually does, which leaves you less places to sell it to, and thus less viability of it as a job and as something to keep you afloat.

There's also of course cultural differences between the West and East in terms of work ethic as well, which can lead to games being pumped out in record time at the cost of nearly suiciding while making them, but that's just a Japanese thing in general regardless of the product being made.

In the US at least credit card companies actively block all activity related to adult games. That means you can't start a business making them. You can't start a store selling them easily either.

We live on Patreon right now because that is truthfully the ONLY option we have. It's all that made western games viable at all. Prior to it everyone (including me) did this as a hobby only.

Right now we basically have to build the industry from the ground up. There's fans that need to be gathered in places like this and convinced to buy stuff, there's finances to gain and lessons to learn. This is a new industry - we need to learn all the lessons the Japanese learned decades ago all over again.

The sad thing is that once we get successful enough the normal porn giants like Vivid will take everything we've built and learned and then try to drive us back out of the market making their own AAA level stuff. It is until I hit $2500 on Patreon, and I'm at $2400 now. When I started Overwhored I was still doing medical work. Then I burned out and moved back to the family farm and ran our greenhouse business as well as doing a lot of the farm work.

I liked the whole "Saving lives" aspect of medical work but my conscience couldn't endure driving people to bankruptcy for the privilege of continuing to live. Farm work just sucks. Goats are clearly the living embodiment of the punishment for our sins.

That said I did like the greenhouse business. I want to start an aquaponics business as a side venture when I move to Washington state in a month. That's like hydroponics but you also raise fish. It'd be well supplemented by adding some wild forage to sell to restaurants as well. Some of the better wild mushrooms can sell for hundreds of bucks. Besides, I really like fucking off innawoods.

Most people from the SFW industry wouldn't "tarnish" themselves going into NSFW though, especially if they're AAA devs, regardless of how much they're paid.
Doing NSFW games takes a different mentality than SFW games too, whether you're doing it for just a fap-fest or to weave the sexuality into the game and such. A lot of SFW devs are way too locked into the guidelines of keeping NSFW stuff out of their games, etc.

We won't be top dog for a very long time of course, but that's what indies are; people go for AAA titles generally for two reasons;
1) They're new to video games and are only going for "the most popular games".
2) They're playing some of the few, few AAA titles that comes out each year that are actually solid, original titles.

The majority of AAA games nowadays are so cookie-cutter that people are flocking en masse to indies, and that's where we get our audience from; people bored with the mainstream and the typical, and so we specialize even more by having porn stuff in our games to allow us to stand out even more.

The things is, we're the farmers; Nutaku and DLSite and all these other places may have the audience and the money and etc. but without us, they have nothing to sell.
We are the devs supplying them with food to sell in their supermarkets, hence as hentai becomes more well known and more viable, we'll always have places to sell our stuff; the gates have been opened, as it were.

I don't think you have to be worried about a future for h-devs in the west at this point. :P
