In a more traditional dating-sim, there is usually a time limit. The protagonist has 5 girls to romance but limited number of moves over the course of the game.

Most /weg/s rely on porn scenes being locked out behind repetitive money farming quests to pad out the game. It's done in a very simplistic way that it becomes pretty boring after a while.

I'm not sure what the ideal way to have the player progress through the game, but essentially it boils down to putting obstacles that the player can cross after fulfilling a precondition. Pretty much a railroad like you said.

I honestly prefer it the lazy weg way where you don't have a time limit. I assume you're talking about games like SS and Town Uncovered (if they had more content). I honestly prefer having it be an open ended game that I don't have to restart to go down another path. I still play it the same way, I focus on one girl and play through her path till the end, or as much as the content allows anyway. I just count each complete path as a ending and then move on to the next. I can always go back and visit the other "path" whenever I want. Unless it's explicitly stated or shown to be a harem situation (mom/aunt in SS) I don't even view it as a harem either. I isolate each girl's path into their own separate thing. I find it to be less time consuming, and more enjoyable and convenient, even with the grind than replying the game 20 times.
