The problem with VH's multiple characters is that most of them had no inter-connectivity, and the majority of them were a complete afterthought. The only one I'd believe was planned from the start if you tried to convince me of the fact is Serena.

Like the VH dev (Devs?) said "Hey. Nanako is great! But what if we added even more girls?" well into development.
It's pretty obvious all of the other girls were thought of after the fact, and not during the initial planning.

It would have been entirely different had the devs planned for multiple girls right from the start, and given each one their own content and role in a story instead of just half-assedly copy pasted them onto Nanako's scene and...Sometimes that creepy thing where even Nanako's face would be plastered onto another girls.

Multiple PoV's "Can" work if done correctly.
There are plenty of mainline non-porn RPGs, especially JRPGs, that do the multiple perspective thing quite well.
For example.
Character A, your main character, is on one end of the world.
The story needs to convey information that's happening on the other end of the world.
So you can have Character A hear about that information in a long winded text box from a generic NPC, or you can go halfway across the world and see this information play out from another character's perspective. This makes the information less boring to absorb, while giving you better context.
The second option is also great if you want the player to be aware of something happening, while also keeping the main character in the dark about it.
Or say the story starts with the assassination of a king and that's the catalyst for everything.
You could just say "The king got stabbed, yo." and be done with it, or you could have the player actually play as the king in the Prologue up until the point that he gets fridged. Kind of like what Sierra did in Last Sovereign with the fake out protagonist at the start.
