I'm currently between jobs and wish to supplement my income with commission work online. How do I go about doing this? I'm a capable artist who can work fast, but I've never made a living off of being an artist. What do I need to consider when setting up a patreon, or an alternate gmail account? If it's the same person, and both the name and the style suggests it is, I've been waiting on 3 pieces of lineart from them since prior to last Christmas, all I received were two incomplete attempts for sketches of the first piece, then long extended silences.

I think they look good and I don't doubt some level of their skill, but twice they've looked for new work while I've still been jilted, so I just can't recommend at least until my stuff is done.

So, I just got a message from paypal because one of my clients is disputing about 85 bucks that he paid me for commissions over the past month. I'd recently transferred all my ill-gotten gains to my Swiss bank account when the chargeback hit, so that's not too much of a problem (even if I can't prove the payment was legit, I can just start a new account under a different name), but where and how do I name and shame this guy if it turns out to be more than a simple misunderstanding?

Yeah, sounds like it. Username ends in 13,uses the same name for outlook and tumblr? I contacted two of the other people that he'd commissioned on tumblr, and the same thing's happened to one of them. The other person he commissioned hasn't had anything happen yet, which is kinda weird, I'll admit.

The client's responded to my PM, claiming that he can't access his paypal and that it was probably hacked. I'm not sure that story checks out, since as far as I can tell his card issuer is responsible for the chargeback and paypal is just reacting to that. I'm gonna contact paypal's support to confirm that before I start accusing him of anything, though.

Hence why I suspect it may be the classic
"pay then overpay, then clawback" scam.
It's common for spammers to rely on artists' hesitance to want to have PayPal suspect lewdness is involved.
I've seen a few comments in the oc draw thread about art not being paid for, but I gave the commissioner the benefit of the doubt. I'm a fairly trusting person but not a fucking idiot!

yeah doing invoices is a sure fire way to get paid safely, you can even tick a box that allows them to tip you there and then. I know it's a pain but it helps

What do you do when an artist is just bad at following general directions?

I usually send detailed descriptions of what I want (sometimes a little too detailed) but the artist keeps taking liberties with it and it's up to the third revisions and I'm not sure of what to do but reply to him on all caps "JUST DRAW WHAT I ASKED YOU FOR YOU DUMB MOTHERFUCKER"
