In real life if a girl as pretty as Yunyun went up to people and begged them to be their friend most people would be intimidated, suspicious or just generally confused. A few people would take advantage of her and fuck her.

Yunyun is too much of a tryhard, she's the chief's daughter yet fails at getting friends- normally she might be able to act like she's too good to be friends with her peers but because she's desperate all her peers don't respect her. All of her "friends", Megumeme included, use her for stuff like food and money while considering her to be annoying.

In the LN, her character was funny because she was a nice normal girl... in a village full of level 99 chuuni. Since she didn't spout stupid garbage nonsense in a childish effort to look cool, she became an outcast.

As the series goes on, the joke changed - she became unable to make friends with ANYTHING. Even animals and flowers shunned her. But this doesn't really make sense, of course. As has been observed, she is cute, nice, powerful and earnest. Yunyun's Flanderization is most obvious in the anime, where we are never actually presented with the original joke - that she would have tons of friends if she were from any other village, but is the only sane girl in an insane town. Instead, we only get the later version of the joke - she is simply inexplicably cursed with the inability to make friends.

I don't know why people keep repeating this "Yunyun is normal" thing. She is 100% chuu2 retarded. There is an entire scene about her casting some big ultimate crimson demon chief attack, on a hilltop backed by lightning, and after this whole production, she has to admit she was making it all up to look cool. Remember, crimson demons are not chuunis because they are being edgy and trying to stand out. They are *genetically* chuunis. It's like Down's. They don't try to be that way, it's literally in their blood.

Yunyun in particular has some common sense but is also very very naive and sheltered and easy to take advantage of. She runs away from potential friends more than drives them away or anything.

Megumeme is well aware of Yunyun's personality flaws and they are in fact best friends. Except being Meg's best friend sucks because Meg is a sorta evil, borderline psycho. She expressly goes to Yunyun's place to "make her cry". Megumin hates weaklings and is trying to harden Yunyun up and get her to become more assertive, she thinks it's for her own good. Plus aforementioned sadistic bitch personality. There is also some unquestionably yuri flavor to them as well.

Yunyun is reading a two-part book on how to become friends with snails. And gets bullied out of the volume so she doesn't get to finish it.
