I will never truly forgive them for what they did with the Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa translations [changing 'pervert' to 'nympho' which is VERY different meaning-wise, and swapping what is meant to be a country-like accent for a modern 'like, omg' spouting thot one for the main girl], but those grievances aside they're alright and license a lot of series that otherwise you wouldn't really expect to see get licensed, and do care/interact with community and fans more than most other official translators.

They're multipurpose. In the image you posted, key ideas (something, died, dead) are bolded in the opening boxes.
Other times, they're used to show that the character is stressing a word or phrase, which helps develop the character's voice. For example, pic related emphasizes words that are relevant to his character (family, fix, save).
Some writers use them to highlight arc words. Hickman does this with ideas that span over several of his works (Great Machine, Solve Everything, Everything Dies). They stick in your mind.
tl;dr they're the Western equivalent of Jojo brackets.
