A push into the mainstream and attracted new anime fans.
It also caused the 3rd Isekai trend to happen. To a lesser degree it also pushed light novel hell on the publishing industry and anime adaptations.
For non anime it more or less created the genre of LitRPG.

Dethroned Belldandy as the NTR Queen and handed that off to Asuna.

Yeah, it's just sad that Progressive wasn't the version of SAO that got animated. It would have resulted in a much better series that never went into any of the elf bullshit, gun bullshit or AIDS bullshit. The anime would have actually been SWORD ART ONLINE for the entire series.

I guess A1 will probably animate a couple of seasons of Progressive inevitably at some point once they completely catch up to the main series and have no other choice (which probably will happen around 2020 when they finally finish Alicization).
