Close, but true bestship is both practical and stylish.

As a discussion-starter, how well do you anons think the empire would have done if it had been Reinhard that had died on geiersburg instead of Kircheis?

Honestly I feel that Kircheis could have rallied the Imperial elements pretty well, perhaps losing a few admirals along the way (reunthal, as you mentioned, possibly bittenfeld).
Given that Oberstein was more for the Empire than for either the Goldenbaums or Reinhard, I think he would've lent his support to Siegfried and act a bit more independently than he did with Reinhard, if only to set up Kircheis better to seize control.

I don't think it would change much in the long term. In the short term it would depend a lot on whether Kircheis is willing and able to replace Reinhard. If Kircheis is not the reigns of power stay with Lichtenlade untill Reuenthal gathers enough power to take over. The Lippstadt Rebellion not costing the Empire nearly as dearly as the failed invasion by the Alliance means that Phezzan and the Terraist cult will see an Imperial victory in the war as an inevitability and act accordingly as they did in our series' cannon.

There's two: the 2008 strategy game that was never released outside japan/localized (pic related is the translation for the HUD) and the Sea of the Stars mod for Sins of a Solar Empire (which hasn't been updated in over 3 years). Both are good but aren't perfect; the 08 game is more tactics focused and does a good job of translating the show's battles into a controllable form, but lacks higher strategy gameplay as it's mission-focused. The SoaSE mod is the reverse, but a bit better in the gameplay department as it allows you to control more ships than but without the formations and show's 'tactics'.

How is that? The reason people constantly lament Kircheis' death was because he could get a word in with Reinhard, always. It's not because he was some God that was good at anything and everything but because he always had Reihards trust and ear and wold balance the guy out going so far as acting as his contience. Hildegard was proabably a far better administrator politician and regent than Kircheis would have ever been and after Reinhard unified the universe that's what the Empire needed.
>>
>>161748708
>>161751776
Kircheis would never make a good replacement for Reinhard simply because he lacked his ambition and fighting spirit. Although he would've been as capable, it's out of character for him to dream of ruling the universe as much as Reinhard did. The main thing that drove Reinhard forward was his battle lust that eventually grew to universal control. Kircheis would've been the one who to straighten him out from that path which could lead to more bloodshed.

If Reinhard really took the bullet then the empire would be finished. Afterall, the next heir they tried to set up was a spoiled brat with almost nothing except his blood to prove worthy for the throne. They need a replacement and neither are a good fit. All Kiricheis wanted in life was to be Reinhard's number 2 and Annerose's love.

Would it really be possible for an empire of a few hundred "feudal" backwards world to have a fleet of ~150,000 large space-faring warships? Would it really be possible for an inefficient corrupt bureaucracy to have a similar sized fleet?

Hell even the galactic empire in star wars, at is peak, only had 25,000 Star Destroyers. In Warhammer 40k the million world Imperium only has a few thousand capital ships in each segmentum (of which there are 5).

LOGH seems to really go overboard with the ship numbers

Yes, because:
1) the ships really arn't all that big

>>161754313
'Large' in this context is no more than one kilometer. LoGH ships are extremely specialized, being little more than fusion reactors, primary neutron/electron beam cannons, primary/maneuvering thrusters and ECM equipment. More than likely there are a considerable number of dedicated shipyards/manufactories that can constantly shit out massive numbers of the same few (and highly economically-designed) ship classes at any given time, especially for the FPA whose designs were said to be highly modular.

>>
>>161756593
The exposition in the novels is pretty clear about the galactic population being a shadow of its former self, having shrunk down significantly due to societal and economic changes.

The scale of the imperial forces in LoGH actually checks out.
Hundreds of thousands of ships would be manned by tens of millions of people (space battle casualty numbers show a ration of a bit more than 100+ dead per destroyed ship). Adding the various parts of the military that don't go into random space battles, you would end up with a military size of about 200 million.
The imperial population is about 25 billion when the story starts, so a military of that size would be less than one percent of the population, which is a reasonable size for the military of a large country that's in the middle of a long war.

LoGH OST Fun Fact: The climax of My Conquest is the Sea of Stars was designed around Maurice Ravel's Bolero, but this was at one time put at risk by copyright issues.
The piece was thought to have been at the public domain at the time, since production took place 50 years afer Maurice Ravel's death, so securing the rights was to be only a matter of commissioning an orchestral performance or licensing a recording.
That turned out not to be the case. The Treaty of San Francisco provided for a copyright term extension, as a kind of war reparation to copyright owners in Allied countries whose copyrights were not respected in Japan during WW2. Bolero, created by a Frenchman before the war, was eligible for a copyright extension of over 10 yeras in Japan, meaning the composition was still under copyright.
The production insisted on keeping it and ended up having to scrounge up the money to cover the unexpected expenses required to settle the rights for Bolero's inclusion in the movie.

Masatoshi Tahara, who was executive producer for the anime, wrote about it in the afterword to the Sogensha SF edition of LoGH volume 6.
Judgning by the first two volumes of the English edition, Viz is not translating these afterwords, which is a shame since they shed a lot of light on the historical and cultural context of LoGH.

September 20th is so close. You can wait.
>>
>>161759227
Copyright law is not fully harmonized, so it still happens that works cross into the public domain in different times.
Ravel died in 1937, so countries with a copyright term of life+50 would expect to see Bolero in the public domain as early as 1987. Japan was (and still is) a life+50 country, which is why the Bolero issue came as a surprise.
The 2016 date is what you get when you calculate the copyright term for a life+70 country, and add a copyright term extension of 8 years and 120 days granted by France to French musical compositions made before or during WW2. The question of whether or not that extension stacks with life+70 outside of France is still a matter of some controversy, but as of 2016 it's finally a moot point.

I don't think so. He is anti-war and really cares for democracy, but his work is based on the idea that the existence of a "proper" democratic regime alone isn't sacred and isn't enough to guarantee a country that's not shit to live in.
The work is filled with examples where people who go against the rules or the establishment bring about good results, or conversely peolpe that fail to go aganst the rules where they should and end up allowing bad things to happen.

I'd sooner call the guy a libertarian than an SJW, but that wouldn't be too accurate either.

>>161772614
"Moreover, the total population of humanity, which had numbered three hundred billion at the height of the Galactic Federation's prosperity, had by this time plummeted to forty billion, due to long years of chaos" is what the book has to say about it in the prologue to the first volume. The empire itself (excluding Fezzan and FPA) actually dwindles down to 25 billion.
Going from 300 million in 25 billion in the 386 years between Rudolf's rise and the start of the story means a negative growth rate of a tiny bit more than 1%. That's about twice as bad as the current rate for crumbling former Soviet republics, but those countries don't have a long war and empire-level mass repression to deal with.

3. The love interest of Reinhardt.
4. Reinhardt's sister.

#2 and #3 are cute. I'd choose #2, I guess, because of the long red hair, but #3 is cool (as in "competent"), too. While #2 is too wild, #3 is too meek, IMHO.

I'm only on episode 47, but the reason I put this show off for so long is because some faggots were saying it doesn't get good until about 20 episodes in. I want to find and punish these liars, the first 20 episodes were fantastic through-and-through. If anything, it dipped a bit in quality just after episode 20, because of the civil war arc featuring a lot of space battles taking up entire episodes.
I just want other anons who have not watched this series yet to know that there is no slow or boring point. If you don't like the beginning chunk, you won't like any of it.

Why do the ships in this series necessarily have to move through the corridors?
What stops them from warping through empty space? Are they obligated to warp to a star system?

I don't know the official reasoning but off the top of my head I remember they had issues with some kind of solar winds or radiation rapids that could destroy ships. They mention the Iserlohn corridor is an actual physical bottleneck for ships. I imagine the Phezzan passageway is another similar issue, and the star system is divided in two by those radiation blockades.

Oberstein waited until Reinhard trusted him before he started in with that shit, and he would do the same for Yang as well.

Even after Yang discovers what Oberstein is up to, the fact that Oberstein is seeking the absolute minimum number of casualties possible might still endear him to Yang.

Yellow Subs: "Before class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Yang and accept that he was the most highly-evolved being the world has ever known, even greater than Reinhard von Müsel!"

At this moment, a visiting brave, patriotic, pro-monarchy Imperial Armed Forces admiral who had recaptured Iserlohn Fortress 15 times and understood the necessity of war and fully supported all military decisions made by Herr Kakka stood and held up a bust of Arle Heinessen.

"What is the greatest known form of government?"

The arrogant professor smirked quite Phezzanily and smugly replied "A republican democracy, as created by the Heinessen in your hands."

"Wrong" said the admiral, as he crushed the bust into dust. "It’s been 500 years since Rudolf von Goldenbaum founded our Ginga Teikoku. If your system was worthwhile, as you say, then we wouldn't have defeated you so effortlessly in the Battle of Shiva."

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his frag and copy of the Riberty Berr. He stormed out of the room crying those liberal El Facil tears.

Mahler played as the students applauded and all registered Imperial Reconciliation that day and accepted baby Alexander as their lord and sovereign. A dog named "Paul von Oberstein" leaped into the admiral's arms, ate some chicken and did literally nothing wrong. The Imperial Pledge was read several times, and Silberberch's ghost showed up and enacted a flat tax rate across the galaxy. If only Kircheis had been there...

The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died in a Terraist attack and was tossed into Hel for all eternity while the legendary galactic heroes look down from Valhalla.

We're all agreed that Spiral Labyrinth was a serious letdown, right? That late 90's-early 00's CGI and bland writing was a real departure from the rest of the series and the first prequel OVA.

I finished everything recently. Really enjoyed it.

Spoilers talk
Does everyone agree that the Earth Cult is the weakest element of the story? Honestly the dynamics of the FPA and Empire were so good I just really hated when the cult detracted from it. They effectively blue balled one of the most satisfying and anticipated conclusions to a series by killing off you know who.

I don't mind so much they killed him off, and I was impressed they went through with it, especially since there were like 30 episodes left. But I don't think the plot ever properly recovered the momentum lost with him. I get that there was a point to slowburning out the conclusion this way, Reinhardt comments on the irony several times. But besides one good Empire arc the rest of the series felt like dragging on Reinhardt's inevitable throwing in of the towel.

I didn't want a cliche ending but I just really wish the cult died out when Julian infiltrated earth. It was a good arc for Julian and really felt like his character finally gained something. And them continuing to influence the series just felt like a tacky uninspired antagonist device that was unneeded.

I think it was good that an entity with no real political power becomes the true "antagonist" of the series. It reminds me of some of the radical Islamist groups today. They may have no real political sway or staying power, but their radical fervor is still able to destabilize military and political powers far more impressive than they themselves are.
>>
>>161811499

I definitely agree that the Earth Cult was pretty lame overall, especially since I thought they were building up to a reveal that would parallel the formation of FPA, and the Earth Cult was actually a vanguard of some far-off human splinter faction that was growing to massive size and would eventually enter into the power struggle as a third faction.

I prefer the Earth Cult exactly as they are, idiots flailing pointlessly without any actual feasible goals. It provides good commentary for the real world.

But that should have been Rubinsky's master plan. A second Phezzan, firmly outside the control of the Empire and FPA and even the Earth Cult, and able to survive the demise of any of those. That would have been a good secret agenda for Rubinsky. Instead he was just... an idiot flailing pointlessly without any actual feasible goals.

One of the battles is literally the FPA making a beeline for Reinhard's ship because it stands out like a sore thumb.
>>

Not really out of nowhere, just a reminder. This is happening to probably hundreds of ships every single battle. We just don't get to see it since we are following the people in charge of the fight.

And there are plenty of times where a fleet uses a charging formation to break through the enemy line, either to carry through and retreat behind the enemy, or to turn around and bombard their backside.
When the fleets are just throwing volleys at each other for 10 hours, those are pretty long range, but there are definitely plenty of instances when the ships are fighting in close-range.
Not to mention all of the boarding tactics that couldn't be carried out from very long range.

Captain Schumacher was a good man who was constantly stuck in unfortunate circumstances. IIRC he was imprisoned, but quickly pardoned once things calmed down. Afterwards, he may or may not have laid his head down onto the sea of the stars.

Mecklinger was always so calm, collected and personable; a great counterpoint to more polarizing characters like Oberstein, Bittenfeld, Reinhard, etc.
The one time in the series he lost his cool, when Reinhard fell ill and the doctors had no idea why so Mecklinger got mad and picked one of them up by the collar and threatened him sent shivers down my spine. It underscored the tension and fear of that situation perfectly.

It's about a conflict between a corrupt democracy and a corrupt dictatorship. I love how he just gets swept up into the story. And even though he knows he's doing the wrong thing, he moves forward because of loyalty. Not to mention that he's one of the only people on the side of the Alliance that at least makes the Alliance-Imperial War feel like a fair fight.

When Rupert (Rubinsky's son) was talking to the FPA ambassador to Phezzan to try and get him to have the FPA government recall Yang Wenli, he threatens "requisitioning the loans in the name of National Socialism". So at the very least, Phezzan is under Nazism.

>Semi-circle formation being a slid tactic,
Napoleon proved this to be true. Ulm and Austerlitz were pretty much Semicircles in action.

Fresh OC? Very nice.
>>
>>161838625
No. The Phezzani government hinted that another Natsoc tier bullshit could happen and the new government would refuse to pay back the money.
They were scared that Yang might be literally Hitler. (They weren't really scared, it was just a bullshit trick)

I never would've thought anyone would post Nepgear of all characters in a LoGH thread.
She makes me think of João Rebelo for some reason.
