There isn't that much between the old show and the ugly one.
Guts and Casca get rescued by skull guy (that was cut from the first show).
Also the beginning of the ugly show was the beginning of the manga for some reason.
They made the later seasons ugly, so noone would watch them, because it's pretty confusing.
