The modern japanese mangaka has no idea what romance is. Instead they have this rpg system of "flags" and "events" where it's a 50-50 scenario whether or not the MC capitalizes on them or completely misses and fucks up.

Masamune is the worst offender. Should have been a revenge/romance story. But then it's revealed that the maid is the one the fag wants to get revenge on. So the main heroine just gets a free pass on being a total bitch to everyone because "deep down she's a good person and never did nobody no wrong". Fucking dumb.
Meanwhile, the only interesting dynamic of the whole shitshow, which was between the MC and the heroine (wow, they actually theoretically had this right) disappears along with the reveal that the premise of the manga no longer exists, so now we can expect a whole shit load of chapters where nothing happens between two people who obviously want nothing more than to fuck each others brains out, but decide not to because Japan is a nation of cuckolds and shame.

Was it really too much to ask for a manga where a bitch who tramautizes a boy's childhood gets what she deserves as an adult? Hell you can even go and say "she changed" but what you can't do you talentless mother fucker is take the TINDER (revenge) away from the FIRE (character dynamic) and expect it to still fucking burn!

Chinatsu getting shat on was great. I mean specifically the last few minutes. The whole thing builds up to a dramatic end to a first romance and the two of them moving on, then right at the end you have this montage where they're suddenly back together and they spend the rest of their lives together with this red string imagery which just comes out of nowhere and totally clashes with the rest of the story. It's a nice neat little happy end and it's pleasant for that, but thematically it's a mess.

Those aren't really a good representative sample of romance anime, and are questionable enough in their quality that you can't really judge the popularity of romance stories by their success.

I think romance anime generally does have plenty of life left in it, we just need romance anime that's not shit and doesn't pander too blatantly. Harems need to fuck off and die; love triangles are fine, and if it's anything beyond that it needs to be interests going different directions all across the cast, not just be all pointing at the one guy. The trope of everyone avoiding having sex needs to fuck off and die too; if you include sexual situations, let them actually have sex, and if you really don't want the characters fucking, don't keep throwing them together half-naked.
