The movie cut a lot of things for time and clarity so you're definitely missing out if you don't read the manga.

I watched it the other day and was actually kinda unimpressed by it, from what I've read though sounds like the manga was a lot better. Not really sure why it's hailed as one of the all time great films though, it's just a shallow action film.

Even better, read the manga while listening to the OST.

Probably one of the best mangas ever to be created. I've read it like 3+ times and I still can't get enough of it, it's that good.
