Sometimes we just want fights to see our favorite characters showcase their potential and sometimes even develop new techniques.
So what if the overarching story possibly takes a back seat? I'd rather it have no reason to progress than trick us so we THINK it's progressing but in actuality it doesn't.
At the end of the day we read BATTLE shounen for BATTLES, and at the very least tournaments can have us see characters besides the MC fight.
