Kemono friends was a surprising hit that no one expected. I don't think things will change, and the industry will keep on using CGI for small anime with no budget.

Kemono Friends' success is more of just catching lightning in a bottle. No one expected it, and I don't think its success is instantly going to make companies eager to fund CGI shows more than they currently are.

CGI isn't cheaper.

It'd be better if they stopped trying to imitate 2D animation and tried to do their own thing instead.

Kemono friends didn't take off because it was CGI. If it had the exact same voice acting, story, screenplay, etc, but was animated 2D, it would have been just as popular.
Although you'd have to add in some janky 2D animation.

See I don't know about that. Part of the reason KF blew up is that a few people saw a weird looking CGI show, which attracted more people who were wondering why everybody was talking about this weird looking CGI show. The novelty gave it a sort of gravitational quality that I don't think would have been there if the show had just been conventionally but badly animated.

This isn't to say that KF being a success means CGI will become the norm, I just think it looking distinct is definitely part of the reason it became popular.

I think it just add to the pile of proof that anime is not really about animation anymore, but rather the market is more conserned with making a bunch of cute girls because people want to watch cute things. Anime is a business, not just a bunch of artist producing their magnum opus for free every day.

Actually I don't mind the growing popularity of CGI. I think if you can free up animation budget and time and personal constraints you can free up the rest of your staff to tell a better story, potentially.

Because as some angry old pedophile once pointed out, many of us are people who don't actually like other people, or reality itself even, all that much. I think a lot of people who are sort of fed up with reality have sought refuge in fiction. Videogames and anime are the two biggest pacifiers. Who wants to watch a bunch of popular people act like a bunch of Chads and Stacys when you can have this cute animes? It's very clean.

This seems to be Japan's biggest problem with 3d animation. Not only do they try and make it look 2d, but they animate it as if it were 2d too, which doesn't always work well.For instance in 2d a character cant stand perfectly still between actions, but in 3d it looks really awkward when a character is frozen without any sort of small movements.
