I'm slowly realizing that Jojo doesn't have much to offer in terms of villains. Kira is the best one, but he's really not that interesting. We just happen to get to know him better. Diavolo is fun to discuss and speculate and I love him, but he's barely present in the actual story. Pucci is cool, but I found him to be extremely inconsistent not to mention the Whitesnake bullshittery. Valentine is alright, but he really only gets decent at the end of SBR and that's mostly because of his backstory. The rest is pretty garbage (Dio is fun I guess). I hope Jobin is the main villain and takes a spot as the best one in the series. He's such a good character

To be totally honest JoJo really isn't that good from a pure narrative perspective. There's a lot to like but in terms of sheer quality it's way more popular than it ought to be. 1-3 are pretty bad in terms of writing. 4 is better and so is 5 outside of the last quarter or so. 6 is pretty bad overall but 7 and 8 have been amazing. Goes to show what the switch to monthly serialization can do for a writer. The writing and pacing is just so much better in SBR and beyond.

In terms of writing 7 and 8 are definitely among the best in the series because Araki has the time and space to properly write the characters. You can't really deny this, the jump in quality is pretty obvious.

This is absurd. Giorno was introduced as a liar and a thief who didn't care at all about how he inconvenienced (and later hurt) Koichi, and in spite of him going on about muh drugs he's never actually shown trying to help random people the way that Buccellati was. He got mad about the death of Mario, but that didn't actually help Mario at all, and it was partially his own fault. Jolyne, Jotaro and Joseph all have scenes where they're shown intervening in cases of injustice - Joseph is INTRODUCED saving a kid from corrupt cops, Jolyne gets those scenes where she helps out Emporio, Foo Fighters, that random bullied inmate, those kids on the plane etc, Jotaro gets plenty of similar scenes with characters like the runaway girl, Kakyoin with the fleshbud etc.

Giorno's more self-righteous than them but there's not really evidence he's actually a better person.

When did I ever say this? Just because the writing in some of the earlier parts isn't good doesn't mean they're bad. Just because I'm critiquing it doesn't mean I'm "throwing it under the bus".

I like Part 3 but it's a fucking mess. The pacing is terrible and the narrative ultimately has to make a lot of sacrifices because of it. Part 7 is a very similar "journey from A to B" story but given the proper room to be told and the proper amount of time for the characters to interact and develop.

If you disagree then discuss it, don't just whine and act like I'm a different kind of fan.

In the first six parts, there's always a handful of characters and a villain who go through something that could very loosely be described as a character arc (which is usually just someone getting into a fight, having a realization, winning the fight and then moving on), and an initial premise which is just a reason for them to go somewhere and have fights along the way, until they learn something, have to go somewhere else and have fights along the way, which is then repeated until they get to their goal. Part 7 is better because, in general, there's a greater wealth characters who have more developed motivations and profiles, and the struggle for the corpse parts being interwoven with a race makes for an engaging story that is always shifting in a way that the audience is both prepared for but is still engaging. Johnny being a failure who's trying to redeem himself makes for a character with more room to act than Jotaro being a badass who wants to save his mom. A group of people trying to track down relics, steal them from other people, and win a race at the same time makes more a more engaging narrative than a group of tourists taking a bunch of detours on their way to Egypt.

He never could have been redeemed and never wanted to, either. Valentine never questioned his own actions, never doubted himself, never wondered about whether what he was doing was for his country or for his own ego. He got countless scenes that showed his cruelty and selfishness - his attitude to characters like Lucy, Scarlet, and his own men - to make him loathsome on a personal scale, and his 'morality' was never anything more than a selfish, greedy asshole with enough charisma to convince some gullible people.

Pucci had more of a chance of redemption than Valentine, and it wasn't like his was big either.

I agree that Part 7 and 8 are outstanding, but I disagree with your other assertion.

Each part has a pretty unique storyline and premise, despite obvious similarities between parts (e.g. 3 and 5, 4 and 8). There are definitely some pacing issues with the earlier parts, but I found 1 and 2 to be very tight stories even if they weren't particularly deep. Luckily, their brevity makes it easier to swallow and simply enjoy the fun.

3 is admittedly horribly paced with the exception of the end. Still, the monster of the week format, while seemingly lazy and boring, was a safe way for Araki to introduce his very new concept of Stands. As such, I can partially forgive 3's pacing issues.

4 is great because Araki hits the ground running with different Stand concepts and characters. You can tell he loved writing 4 because he had a firm grasp of what Stands were after 3 and what he could do with them to suit the narrative. 4 too has pacing issues but I think that is more intentional as compared to 3 because of the very different themes he wanted to explore in 4, namely how a seemingly quiet town can hide a menacing truth. He also has a great balance of the main characters that carried over from part 3.

5 is basically a barebones and better 3 with actual pacing and characterization. I would argue that 5 is the only part that is too fast, actually and the final fight suffers because of it. Giorno is the most disappointing aspect of 5 besides the final fight itself, but even the ending has its merits and reinforces the themes.

Your notions about 6 are hilariously wrong. 6 is interesting because it was both a transitional part and a part that was meant to end the overall series arc that is Dio and his legacy. Pucci is an excellent villain who comes into his own just as Jolyne does, and their dichotomy as the end of the legacies of their forebears (Dio and the Joestars, respectively) resonates throughout the entire arc.

To be fair he is pretty well written considering his schtick is being a smooth talker who makes you WANT to believe he's right. I feel like his charisma is actually palpable and real, not implied like in the case of older villains like DIO. DIO's charisma is sort of just stated to be there and he just convinces people as if by magic (which it kind of is to be fair) but Valentine's charisma is actually there in the way he's drawn and how he speaks and is actually able to convince some irl readers. You're not missing anything by not thinking he's in the right because he clearly isn't, but the amount of people who do think he's right is a testament to how well written he is, but also a little worrying that they're that gullible.

Araki originally planned on him being a traitor who sold the gang out to Diavolo, but he dropped that plot point because he was going through a rough period of depression at the time and his characters are what got him through it, so he couldn't bear to put them through a betrayal like that especially because he was a friend they'd known for years and someone Narancia's owed his life too, and also because Giorno would have been the one to kill him and he thought the story was getting too dark and sinister for his younger readers. So he wrote him out in as natural a way he could. It makes sense considering what was set up with him early on; he's shown physically assaulting Narancia's early on which is played for laughs but might have had deeper meaning if the plot line was kept, his Stand is clearly designed as an antagonist Stand, and Giorno is the only one with immunity to his virus at the end of his intro fight so he would be the only one capable of fighting him directly. Sucks that it was dropped but that's how it is I suppose. Source is the post-scriptum of Part 5 included at the end of the last volume.
